That was to be expected. Like every year, Xiaomi planned a double presentation of its new high-end smartphones: a local one (in China) and a global one (in Europe). Since arriving in Europe, the manufacturer has taken advantage of the MWC (the world's largest mobile show) showcase to organize an exclusive event on the Old Continent. But now, the 2020 edition of the Barcelona fair is officially canceled, maintaining the presentation is no longer really of interest.
Xiaomi prefers to play at home
Following the cancellation of the MWC, brands had to be reactive. For Xiaomi, the stakes were (a little) lower. The Chinese has already presented its new smartphones on its lands. So we already know everything about the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro. Two unknowns remain: availability and prices in France.
Rather than taking unwise risks by sending thousands of journalists to Barcelona, Xiaomi has therefore chosen to postpone the conference originally scheduled for February 23, 2020. Prudence is the mother of safety. In its press release, Xiaomi states:
Xiaomi understands the GSMA’s decision to cancel the Mobile World Congress 2020 in Barcelona. The safety of employees, partners, our friends, the media and guests of Xiaomi being our top priority, we also postpone the global launch of our latest flagship, the Mi 10 originally scheduled for February 23, one day before the MWC . We will be hosting a separate launch event in Europe at a later date, where we will share information about the Mi 10 series and more amazing products. We will keep you posted on this.
A first in the history of MWC
This is the first time that the organizers of the MWC have canceled the event. However, this decision is not a surprise. The show brings together the biggest tech players, thousands of whom come from (or have passed through) the Chinese provinces affected by the coronavirus, the main factories being located in these regions.
Very quickly, some brands canceled their participation in the show (LG, ZTE, Nokia, Ericsson, etc.). In just eight days, the list grew considerably, raising fears for the worst for the show's organizer, GSMA. An emergency meeting, originally scheduled for Friday, February 14, was held on the afternoon of February 12. The ax fell: the MWC was canceled for the first time in its history.
If Xiaomi is the first to publicly announce the cancellation of its conference, other brands should follow. Oppo, HMD and Huawei have also planned conferences in Barcelona, outside of Fira (place where the MWC is held every year). For the time being, the French subsidiaries of these three brands have nothing to tell us. But it would not be surprising if they adopted the same strategy as Xiaomi.
