Fernando Alonso would like to do at least one test in the Toyota Yaris WRC, taking advantage of his links with the manufacturer.
After the ovals, endurance and rally-raid, Fernando Alonso wants to try a new discipline. The Spaniard would like to take advantage of his ties with Toyota to do at least one test in the Yaris WRC that led Ott Tänak to the title.
"I was in three or four (categories) where Toyota Gazoo rolls and the WRC is the only one missing," Alonso told the official website of the World Rally Championship during a visit to the Rally of Spain. "So maybe I'll talk to Tommi (Mäkinen, boss of the Toyota team) and it would be interesting to do at least one try in the Yaris. "
Alonso has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice with Toyota and he will play the next Dakar with the Japanese manufacturer.
A very different discipline
Fernando Alonso believes that the rally would be a discipline very different from those where he drove. The pilot must trust the co-driver turn-off, which is different from anything he knows, including rally-raid.
"The rally is more complex (than the rally-raid)," says Alonso. "I respect the rally so much. Having a co-pilot who needs to be trusted turn-to-turn for the notes is probably a little harder than the Dakar. "
Several F1 drivers have tried the WRC. Kimi Räikkönen and Robert Kubica rode in this category before their return to F1 and Valtteri Bottas played his first rally earlier this year.
