During high school, some teenagers they lose the desire, the interest, the fascination necessary to learn. They complain about teachers or homework, show signs of boredom, or find themselves lost in school.
“Adolescence is usually busy in psychic jobs that demand a lot of energy and interest and that are not always done consciously or are not easily visible to others. As a vital stage, it is characterized by presenting abrupt changes and of all kinds, which invade the young person and leave him “in check” many times, confused, disoriented, searching, ”says Florencia Gujis, a psychopedagogue (MP 1,528).
The specialist refers to the hormonal and physical changes that they entail Psychological changes also very important: there is a great increase in sexual and aggressive drives, and the ego, as a psychic instance, is forced to form new defensive mechanisms to control these drives.
Duels and beginnings
“Changes in relationships with his family and with society, because in general they no longer treat him as the baby he was and now he is required to assume new roles that, many times, he was not taught to exercise. Thus, he faces three fundamental and interrelated duels: for the lost infantile body; for the childhood parents, who are no longer superheroes but human, with contradictions and errors, for the role and childhood identity ”, Gujis explains in detail.
There are also many beginnings. Autonomy to move around the street, night out, dating and sex, the consumption of alcohol and sometimes other substances, among other things. And furthermore, the exit to the exogamy, where the peer group becomes a fundamental part of his life.
As the psychoanalyst Silvia Bleichmar so wisely said: “School is a place of dream recovery”. In it, young people must be able to arm or recover the ability to think (themselves) and build a different world, to fully introject the value of ethics. Then learning and studying will have another meaning: it will no longer be only to pass subjects, but it will be the path that will allow them to improve their lives and that of others.
“Because we are not without the other, without the others. And it is in institutions such as NGOs, religious groups, political activists, student centers, etc., where many young people find their place, by being able to operate from there. positive changes for society ”, complements the psychopedagogue.
When this sense is not found, calls can occur existential void pathologies: apathy, apathy, anhedonia … Emptiness that leads to depression or that is filled with strong and rapid sensations to avoid the advent of anguish. Thus, they end in tragic endings such as addictions, accidents, criminal behavior, unwanted pregnancies, venereal diseases.
“If to all this are added the worries and stress that the children suffer due to the economic difficulties that may exist at home, the family climate -very violent, so many times-, what they hear and see about the reality of the country and of the world, etc., we will understand that behind the initial question there are many questions vital and urgent that capture their interest and attention ”, concludes the expert.
When stimulating, then, the best thing is to strengthen the interests that the adolescent presents, not those that as parents, they consider that they should develop.
