I saw on Facebook that you recently put the Bentley Continental GTC and Flying spur for testing. Does Bentley still sell so many cars these days? Do customers finance their car or pay in cash? "
– Mathieu Laforêt
Indeed, prestige cars like the Bentley Continental GTC and Flying Spur that we recently tested attract only a very small percentage of the population. However, you'll be surprised to learn that many more Bentleys are selling in Canada than you might imagine, even during a pandemic.
This is precisely the kind of research we attempted to do when Bentley invited us to drive its latest models. Since we know very well that a buying advice related to these vehicles would be useless, we instead tried to dig to discover another striking reality of the automotive world: there are still quite a few Bentley in Quebec.
Bentley sells, on average, 12,000 vehicles a year globally. They are all assembled by hand in England, despite a German administration.
Admittedly, this figure is small when compared to that which represents the sales of vehicles intended for the middle class. For example, some 500,000 Toyota RAV4s are sold per year on our continent. But it's still funny that more Bentley Continental GTs sold in Canada in 2019 than Acura RLXs!
According to Maurice Assor, sales representative at Moteurs Décarie – Bentley dealership for the greater Montreal area – on average, 47 Bentley models leave his dealership per year, or the equivalent of about 4 vehicles per month. Not bad for cars that sell for around a quarter of a million dollars!
" You have to understand that in my world, customers buy purely out of emotion. For example, my client, who has just injured his back in his Ferrari, storms into my dealership to buy a more comfortable vehicle. And it's urgent! If I don't sell him a Bentley right away, I lose him. »- confessed Mr. Assor.
This is the reality of the rich and famous who are, according to Mr. Assor, surprisingly numerous in the greater Montreal area.
Mr. Assor admits, however, that the coronavirus pandemic has slowed sales of Bentley vehicles. However, the traffic nonetheless remains continuous and impressive. The best-selling Bentayga SUV is the most popular; it represents no less than 50% of the brand's total sales.
" I have at least one new customer per month who is interested in this vehicle. "
Regarding the transaction of these exceptional models, Mr. Assor explained to us that his dealership offers financing plans, but that his customers mostly pay in cash, especially for the Continental GT and Flying Spur models, those which usually fit into a collection alongside other renowned cars.
However, we notice a higher rental rate on the Bentayga side. According to Maurice Assor, the Bentayga is a practical vehicle, used for daily needs, which explains the high rental rate.
Finally, when Mr. Assor was asked whether consumers of Bentley vehicles in Quebec are interested in electrification – like the Bentayga plug-in hybrid, for example – the representative's response was a categorical no. Indeed, it seems that the bourgeois class of greater Montreal has not yet arrived there.
A recommendation ?
As for the 2020 Bentley Continental GTC (for convertible) and Flying Spur 2020, the sharing of components with the German cars has by no means infringed the English signature of these cars. On the contrary, the fact that these cars are based on a platform borrowed from the Porsche Panamera only improves the quality of the assembly, the general ergonomics and the dynamism of these legendary road cars.
Representing the epitome of grand touring, abundance and prestige, the Bentley Continental GTC and Flying Spur are also surprisingly fast cars, displaying remarkable handling in sporty driving and delivering breathtaking acceleration despite their weight. imposing. Once again, thanks to the Germans!
But if we had a recommendation for you to buy a new Bentley, unless it's a special model, like a Speed or a Supersport, it would be to lease it instead of buy it. Because its resale value is so sadly bad that your dear luxury Englishman could lose almost half of its value in the space of a few years.
Thank you for trusting the RPM team.
