Modena is the Italian capital of the sports car. This is where we begin our journey "Made in Motor Valley", the new Motor1.com web series dedicated to the excellence of this region called the "Motor Valley". Many brands are linked to the capital of Emilia Romagna. But only one brand of them has been physically present in the heart of the city for 80 years: Maserati.
The Trident has been in Viale Ciro Menotti since 1939. A factory which has one great characteristic: manual production. Here, the assembly line takes on another dimension compared to modern robotic factories. And the women and men who work there are not skilled workers, but specialized technicians.
At one time, all Maserati were produced in this factory. But they were gradually transferred to other factories (Grugliasco for the Ghibli and Quattroporte, Mirafiori for the Levante) to make way for the most exclusive models: Granturismo and Grancabrio. Cars whose price starts at around 130,000 euros, and can climb much higher depending on the customization possibilities, almost endless (more than 400,000!).
This place is so unique that the name "factory" is rather simplistic. The most correct term, as we were told several times during our visit, is "workshop", where technicians screw, assemble, polish and take care of every detail of the sports cars at Trident.
A new era with respect for tradition
An almost artisanal way of making cars, which resists the speed of modernity, but does not give up on it. In reality, this factory is about to undergo a major transformation because it is precisely in Modena that will be born in 2020 the new sports car at Trident, which many call Alfieri.
On November 12, 2019, the very last GranTurismo left the production lines. Now is the time to start renovating the system, which will give birth to the new model, which will be, among other things, the first electric Maserati. But this is another story that we will tell you soon. In the meantime, let's take advantage of this Maserati "Made in Modena".
Good viewing !
