According to Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, the launch of the next generation iPhone will not be delayed by the Covid-19 crisis. It should therefore take place next September. But speculation about the technical characteristics of the next version of the famous smartphone is already going well. Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), well aware of the supply chain involving flat screens, updates them with its own information.
Apple's entry into the 5G battle
While the current generation of iPhone 11, launched in September 2019, comes in three models, the next will consist of four: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Its launch will mark a turning point with Apple's entry into the battle for 5G, more than a year and a half after its five biggest competitors in the Android camp: Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. The four models will be 5G and will all have Oled screens.
According to DSCC, the 5.4-inch flexible Oled display on the iPhone 12 will come from Samsung Display, not BOE as rumored. " We’ve seen reports that it does or doesn’t have a touch panel built into the screen, recalls Ross Young, the head of the firm. We believe there will be an integrated touch panel. The display resolution is 2348 x 1084 pixels or 476 dots per inch. Although not in the iPhone 12, BOE could equip the successor to the iPhone 12 in 2021 if all goes well on the iPhone 12 Max. "
First presence of Chinese BOE in the iPhone
The 6.1-inch flexible Oled screen on the iPhone 12 Max will be supplied by BOE in conjunction with LG Display. It will have a display resolution of 2540 x 1174 pixels, or 460 dots per inch. This is the first time BOE, the number one Chinese flat panel display, will be present on the iPhone. But according to DSCC, it is LG Display, a supplier with which Apple is already familiar, which should grab the bulk of the volumes for this model of the iPhone 12. The touch film will not be integrated into the screen. In terms of price, the iPhone 12 Max will be positioned starting at $ 749, compared to $ 649 for the iPhone 12.
The iPhone 12 Pro will have a flexible 6.1-inch Oled screen with the same resolution as the iPhone 12 Max. The screen will be provided by Samsung Display, without an integrated touch film. In addition to the 3D front camera used for facial recognition, this model will have a time-of-flight back camera that acts as LiDAR for object detection and telemetry functions.
Qualcomm returns to supply the modem
The iPhone 12 Pro Max will benefit from a larger 6.7-inch flexible Oled screen from Samsung Display. The screen will offer a resolution of 2785 x 1293 pixels, or 459 dots per inch. In addition to its size, it differs from that on the iPhone 12 Pro by the integration of the touch film. The other features will be the same as the iPhone 12 Pro. The iPhone Pro Max would be positioned from 1099 dollars, against 999 dollars for the iPhone Pro.
The four models will be powered by a new processor, the A14 Bionic, manufactured by TSMC in 5 nanometer technology, which will then be the ultimate chip technology. The 5G modem will come from Qualcomm, a former Apple supplier with which the Californian mobile giant reconciled in April 2019, after two years of latent conflict over patent royalties. During this litigation, the modem was provided by Intel. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will be limited to 5G frequencies below 6 GHz, while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone Pro Max will also operate in the millimeter wave frequencies.
