The presentation of a collaboration between Virgil Abloh and Mercedes-Benz had been announced for some time now and we can finally contemplate the result. The artistic director of Louis Vuitton's men's collections and the German manufacturer had fun designing a unique version of a timeless Mercedes-Benz model: the G-Class.
Virgil Abloh presented the result of his work and that of Gorden Wagener, chief creative director of Mercedes-Benz, at the beginning of September to his followers, explaining that the car they had in front of them was supposed to symbolize “this what luxury could look like 100 years from now ”.
The Abloh and Mercedes-Benz project, called “Project Geländewagen”, aimed to “transform this iconic all-terrain vehicle into an improved AMG version made purely for the streets”. The German manufacturer unveiled this prototype during a live-stream on Tuesday, September 8.
This unique model conceived as a “futuristic deconstruction of luxury” has many characteristics of a racing car, including the steering wheel of the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE, a kind of Formula 1 of the roads. The dashboard (and the entire cabin to be honest) suggests that we are in a spaceship, which would apparently allow us to travel to a luxurious future.
