The previous version of Toyota Yaris had already been entitled to its sports version, the GRMN. Strong 212 hp, out of a 1.8 4-cylinder engine, supercharged not by a turbo, but by a compressor. A rare solution for small cars, completely out of step with the competition, using smaller displacement turbocharged engines.
With the generation of Yaris arriving on the market, the fourth, Toyota still stands out by offering a version supercharged like never before. This time, no compressor but a turbo, which this time blows into the bronchial tubes of a 1.6 3-cylinder, and providing under the driver's right pedal controls the trifle of 261 hp and 360 Nm of torque! Huge in a category of city cars, where the average maximum power does not exceed 220 hp. Even the Volkswagen Polo WRC had not dared to go this far.
Another feature that makes the Yaris GR completely out of step with its competitors: all-wheel drive, two Torsen differentials, one on each axle (optional). Mandatory or almost to get the power to the ground. The management of this transmission is called GR-Four, and allows you to vary the distribution of power between the front and the rear, 30/70 to 50/50. The gearbox is six-speed manual.
But it is not finished. The structure incorporates, to stiffen and lighten, polymer plastic reinforced with carbon fiber on the roof, aluminum hoods and doors and forged 18-inch rims. In the end, the Japanese city car weighs 1,280 kg. And it is only available in 3-door bodywork (without frame), a specific body therefore, when the classic versions only exist in 5-door.
The performances are amazing, with 230 km / h top speed (not so impressive) but above all a 0 to 100 shot in less than 5.5 seconds.
An almost wise interior and a stratospheric price
If the technique and exterior plastic are quite impressive, the interior is a little less so, with only red stitching on the steering wheel and gear lever, and wraparound bucket seats.
The price has been unveiled, and clearly, the Yaris GR is not cheap. Indeed, the price is set at 35,500 €, more than the old GRMN, which was however a limited edition. In addition, with 192 grams of CO2 released per km, the GR is subject to a substantial penalty of 9,103 euros. We let you do the math, the starting bet is high, very high. But the technical solutions and the specificities of the car justify it.
We can't wait to try this Japanese firecracker anyway, so you'll hear about it soon on our site.
The 1st Caradisiac auto show could not have taken place without the active support of the Cotentin agglomeration community and the Association des Amis du Hangar à Dirigeables d'Ecausseville. Many thanks to all those who facilitated the reception of Caradisiac in the airship hangar of Ecausseville, a unique historical monument in the world!
Our warmest thanks to the Prévost Group, which supported us from the first days in this adventure of organizing the 1st Caradisiac auto show. His experience has facilitated the management of the delivery flows of more than one hundred cars in the Hangar d'Ecausseville, nestled in the Normandy countryside!
