While waiting for a possible The Witcher 4 in video game, a subsidiary of CD Projekt Red announces the imminent arrival of an augmented reality game on Android and iOS smartphones. His name: The Witcher Monster Slayer.
For four years now Pokémon Go is out. If the phenomenal success of augmented reality video games on mobile has since fallen, it nevertheless still pushes studios to offer this video game experience. We saw it for example in 2019 with the release of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. We see it today with The Witcher: Monster Slayer, ad by CD Projekt Red on August 26, 2020.
To put it quickly, this new augmented reality video game – whose release date has not yet been announced – is the equivalent of Pokémon Go in the land of the witcher: the goal is to travel the same world as Geralt de Riv, the protagonist of the novels written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, and defeat all kinds of horrors that inhabit swamps, woods and isolated mountains.
The Witcher with Pokémon Go sauce
Announced for Android and iOS, the game is not developed directly by CD Project Red (the Polish studio has announced that it is working on another video game dedicated to The witcher, after Cyberpunk 2077, but without going into the details: maybe it will be The Witcher 4 ?), but by a specific structure linked to the company: Spokko. Formerly independent, it was acquired in 2018 by the Polish studio.
A dedicated site has already been set up, with some screenshots giving an idea of the game system: on a virtual map representing the player’s surroundings, but adapted to the atmosphere of The witcher, different monsters will appear. It will then be necessary to defeat them to complete a sort of hunting table. Creatures will have varying levels of rarity and difficulty, up to legendary rank.
It seems like The Witcher: Monster Slayer will offer a system of interaction between players, and perhaps cooperation depending on the challenges to be accomplished and the enemies to be fought. The visuals suggest that the combat system will require parrying enemy attacks at the right time, and landing your own as soon as an opening is made in the opposing guard.
According to Spokko, the weather and time of day will influence what kind of monsters are around – and possibly where you are as well. Those and those who played The Witcher 3 for example remember that the specters of noon and midnight appeared for example… at noon and at midnight. And that other creatures, like water hags, were more dangerous in a downpour.
