With the launch of his car Ghost Extended, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars reveals the capabilities of a suite of technologies that ultimately enhance the driving experience in both urban and rural areas. The automaker's team of engineers redesigned every aspect of the manufacturing phase: design, technology, engineering, materials and method.
With a minimalist design, the new car is 170mm longer than its predecessor Ghost, providing more room and legroom for rear seat occupants. The brand's designers extend the rear door and bodywork around the rear door openings.
Regarding engineering, Ghost Extended benefits for the first time from all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering. Power is provided by a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged engine developed exclusively for Ghost. It produces 571PS and 850Nm of torque. The requirement for silence on the move is met thanks to 100 kg of acoustic damping materials incorporated into the chassis, bodywork and tires, which deliver exhilarating performance without disturbing the inner peace.
What interests us most is the manufacturer's desire to achieve “simplicity through complexity”. And this was achieved through sophisticated body shapes, made possible by 3D printing and advanced generative design.
The company explained in a press release that for Ghost Extended, the beam-melted metal components are welded to the body in white, while parts made by multi-jet fusion and selective laser sintering are individually assembled at the factory in Rolls Royce.
More traditional craftsmanship finds contemporary expression with the introduction of two new wood finishes, developed especially for Ghost. Obsidian Ayous is inspired by the rich color palette of igneous rocks, while Dark Amber has veins of fine aluminum particles that run through the wood. Both are available in an open pore finish, which allows the tactility of the material to fully express itself.
" Many (customers) have asked the brand to create a car that offers the pleasure of improved rear space inside the cockpit without compromising driving dynamics. Ghost Extended responds to this customer demand by creating a product that increases both their professional demands and their lifestyle. »Declares Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
The first deliveries to customers will be made in the fourth quarter of 2020.
