Much excitement around the marriage between PSA and Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles. At the direction of the Italian-American group, Mike Manley argues in this context that he would imagine buying Tesla technological equipment bricks rather than create the necessary to produce future electric cars.
Motors, batteries and platforms
Mike Manley's comments were published in the Business Insider media on October 31, during the formalization of a merger between the two groups.
The FCA executive cited engines, batteries, suspensions and platforms that could be supplied by the American manufacturer, to produce electric cars very quickly and on a large scale.
A confidence that does not seem to have had validation or comments made public on the French side.
PSA has made significant investments to launch an expanding range of electric vehicles, both in passenger cars and light and light commercial vehicles.
Peugeot e-208 and e-2008, Citroen DS3 Crossback e-tense, Jumpy and new Berlingo Van, Opel Corsa-e and Vivaro, etc. : the list is constantly expanding models that are or will be launched by 2021.
Can we imagine that the French group open to the merger order from Tesla equipment that it already has? Especially concerning platforms and engines that can be operated for a very wide range of vehicles.
For batteries, on the other hand, it would be plausible in the current context where shortages are to be expected because of electrified road sheets particularly dense for more and more brands in cars.
What interest for Tesla?
FCA has already knocked on Tesla's door to obtain valuable power quotas in order to limit CO2 emissions from its range and thus avoid heavy fines from the European Union. And Elon Musk, the boss of Tesla, has often offered to help builders in the name of his involvement for the environment and public health.
But now the American produces very high volumes of electric vehicles for a structure that is still young, fragile and closely watched by investors and financial analysts. Is it conceivable that, in this context, it will become the supplier of a group in the process of gaining fourth place in the world and, it must not be forgotten, who is likely to be a troublesome rival?
As long as it is about electric quotas or patents to be exploited, why not, but engines, batteries and platforms, it would be really surprising on the part of this free rider!
