ERGONOMICS AND DESIGN: GALAXY TAB A

In terms of ergonomics and design, it is quite complicated to decide between the two shelves. Without being revolutionary, the finishes of the two shelves are very correct. All glass and aluminum, with their 10.1 inch screens, they are pleasant to handle, even if, after a few sessions of use, the more than 460 g of each device begins to be felt. The Galaxy Tab wins because it offers a more contained format, being less 1.5 cm wide therefore the occupancy ratio of its screen is higher (81% against 75%), which is always one more.

Left, the Galaxy Tab A. Right, the MediaPad T5.

Also, in addition to its design modeled on more premium products, such as the Galaxy Tab S5e or the Tab S6, it gains a USB-C port, which, in 2020, is more practical than a micro-USB port with odors of mothballs, like on T5. The two tablets carry 32 GB of storage space and this capacity can be increased thanks to a microSD card. Note that there is a version of the MediaPad T5 with only 16 GB of storage, but, with almost half already occupied by the operating system, it can quickly become saturated.

The tablets do not have a biometric unlocking system (neither fingerprint sensor nor facial recognition) and waterproof certification. Finally, there is a 3.5 mm mini-jack, very practical for connecting headphones and earphones.

audio:

The 3.5mm mini-jack ports offer quite different results. That of the Samsung Tab A5 is clearly more powerful and has a much wider dynamic range. Also, the sound nuances of the different songs will be better reproduced. However, it sins quite clearly in the crosstalk, which plays on the fidelity of the stereo reproduction. In this area, the MediaPad T5 does a little better, without making a miracle either.

Output level 75 mVrms 117 mVrms
Distortion + Noise 0.004% 0.006%
Dynamic range 88.7 dB 106 dB
crosstalk -64.7 dB -53 dB

The two shelves are also equipped with two speakers located on their lower edge. Those of the Samsung tablet offer a less saturated sound, when those of the Huawei tablet lack bass, while having an unpleasant sound rendering.

SCREEN: MEDIAPAD T5

Huawei and Samsung have chosen the LCD, with screens of 10.1 inches diagonal and a definition of 1,920 x 1,200 px and a resolution of 224 ppi (and at 16:10 ratio). And if Huawei wins this round, it's because its panel is IPS type – a technology that produces more faithful colors -, when Samsung was satisfied with an old TFT panel, inherited from its Tab A of 2016!

Screens particularly subject to reflections.

It is thus possible to configure the display of the Huawei tablet to approach the expected values. Here we measure a color temperature at 6,700 K and a delta E at 2.5. This is impossible with the Samsung tablet which remains blocked on a temperature of 7 138 K, despite a delta E well contained at 2.7. The Galaxy Tab takes a few points by offering a better maximum brightness (421 cd / m² against 319 cd / m²), but is still lagging behind with its rather bad build rate. Finally, regardless of the model, these tablets are extremely prone to reflections and use in direct sunlight is prohibited.

PERFORMANCES: GALAXY TAB A

Inside these tablets, we find entry-level configurations. The Galaxy Tab A is powered by an Exynos 7904 SoC supported by 2 GB of RAM. For the MediaPad T5, there are two configurations articulated around the Kirin 659 SoC. The version with 16 GB of storage has 2 GB of RAM, and the version with 32 GB of storage space offers 3 GB of RAM. Samsung's chip is more recent than two years, we consider it better optimized and better able to launch and manage multiple applications at the same time.

The heating of the Galaxy Tab (top), as with the MediaPad (bottom), is quite contained during a video capture session.

For the game part, the devices are clearly not intended for long gaming sessions. They are doing generally well with 2D titles, but they should not be asked to run the most demanding games.

PHOTO: GALAXY TAB A

In general, tablets are hardly recognized for their photography capabilities. Except with the Galaxy Tab S6 and perhaps the next iPad Pro, the photo has never been the central element of these devices, and it shows well with the two models of this duel. Their equipment fairly logically reflects their lack of ambition in the field. Thus, on the back of Tab A, we find a single 8 megapixel sensor, with a lens open to f / 1.9. As for the T5, it has a 5 megapixel sensor, with fairly closed optics at f / 2.4.

Selfies module 2 MP, f / 2.4 5 MP, f / 2.2

In broad daylight, neither of the two tablets offers a truly satisfactory result. Nevertheless, the superiority of the Samsung tablet is quite clear. With its more defined sensor and optics capturing more light, its photo offers more details and fairer colorimetry, despite a fairly marked smoothing and a tint that draws towards red. There is not much that plays in favor of the MediaPad: the shot lacks sharpness quite clearly, the colors do not stand out at all as they should and the digital smoothing harms the whole a little more.

When the brightness decreases, it becomes even more complicated for these photo modules to restore our test scene. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A drowns the photo in a very strong grain and the picture is not really usable. At least we can still observe some nuances and details of the scene. Unfortunately we cannot say the same for the cliché of the Chinese tablet. To compensate for its poor photo module, the MediaPad excessively smooths the image, so much so that you can hardly distinguish the scene. It is as if a veil had been placed on the lens.

Front and video module

With these two devices, it is possible to record videos in 1080p (Full HD) and up to 30 frames per second. Their autofocus works pretty well, but doesn't work miracles either. Also, after a while, the weight of the shelves is felt. For selfies, whatever your choice, you will have to do with a fairly marked smoothing of the faces.

AUTONOMY: GALAXY TAB A

The two tablets do not play in the same category of autonomy. While the Samsung device has an accumulator with a capacity of 6,150 mAh, the Huawei tablet is content with "only" 5,100 mAh. It is a bit short for a screen of more than 10 inches, especially when we know that today some smartphones with 6.5-inch panels have identical batteries. Thus, in practice, after our SmartViser test protocol, the Galaxy Tab A largely dominated the MediaPad T5 by switching off after 19 h 26 min, against 12 h 41 min for the tablet from Huawei.

A step ahead for the Galaxy Tab A

Small victory for Huawei, it takes 3 hours to recharge the T5, against more than 4 hours for the Galaxy Tab A.

VERDICT: GALAXY TAB A

After a fierce fight, the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 inch 2019 version of Samsung wins quite clearly. Being more recent than its Chinese rival, it is better armed than the latter. More efficient, more enduring, and more effective in photography, it is the benchmark for entry-level tablets tested by us. Admittedly, its introductory price is a little higher, but these few more euros are necessary to obtain a better product. Tab A will thus be ideal for watching series or managing the few daily administrative tasks.
