Retro Widget (€ 2.29) is an app that adds widgets to the home screen of your iPhone under iOS 14. As its name suggests, it plays on the nostalgic fiber by displaying … the main screen the Nokia 3310 in a widget. For the younger ones, it's a phone released in 2000 that had only three functions: calling, texting and playing Snake.
Available in three different sizes, the widget always displays your carrier name, time, battery level, and your iPhone's cellular signal. The presentation is identical to that imagined by Nokia for its phone and the nostalgic side works very well. Especially since the developer thought of a nice little touch, by activating the green backlight when dark mode is active.
Nice, but this widget does nothing other than this old-fashioned display. The large widget displays the game icon Snake II that came with the phone, but there isn't even a little game built into the app … which should happen in a future release, the developers tell us. Another point to note, the battery level display will not always be correct, due to the widget update mechanism, and the cell reception level does not reflect that of the iPhone, since an app cannot not access this information.
It may be a little light to justify the 2.29 € requested, but we'll let you be the judge. After all, can we put a price on nostalgia? Retro Widget requires iOS 14 and its interface is only available in English, but its French designers have planned to translate it.
