Open your eyes to count the number of intake manifolds … are you there? Yes it is, there are 16!

This is a V16, the only engine of this architecture developed by BMW. Dvoil recently by the BMW Museum, the prototype on the basis of series E32 E 7 who had the honor of receiving this indit motor goes back to 1987. The block, the cylinder heads, collectors specific are well heard mouls for the occasion and drivent V12 M70 and not the assembly of two V8 that may have seemed logical. With a 6.6L cylinder this V16 retains the opening angle of the V12, closer. The power is not very high on the V12 5.0L (300 hp), this V16 provides 408 hp. The V12 6.6L of the current BMW M760i provides 600 but with the help of two turbos.

The engine, however, was so big that the engineers were forced to install an additional radiator in the trunk of the series 7 E32 which welcomed it. This prototype is nicknamed 767iL "Goldfisch". This required opening a large cope on the passenger side of the car and a large grille replaced the trunk head at the license plate bracket. Thus mutilous we can say that the series 7 lost much of its natural elegance …

After a thorough development, the prototype was presented to the company's internal circles. Unfortunately, they decided to postpone the project to a later date and the V16 never finally went into production.

The BMW V12 looks like a relic of the past nowadays and its future fate seems to be sealed. Last June, BMW M boss Markus Flasch said: "I do not think we'll see a new twelve-cylinder model in the near future."
