Mi 10T Pro review: Xiaomi Mi everyone agrees – lemon squeezer

In 2020, Xiaomi decided to launch (a little) fewer smartphones than the year before. But there is no question of abandoning the T series which, according to the manufacturer, is one of its biggest successes. France is even the country where the Mi 9T has sold the best. That is to say if the question of launching a successor did not even arise.

The Mi 10T Pro is therefore the most premium model in the range. After a successful first grip with the Mi 10T Pro, I couldn't wait to see what this smartphone was worth on a daily basis. Sold at 599 euros from October 26 (pre-orders open from October 16 to 25 with a free Mi Electric Scooter Essential electric scooter), it presents, on paper, one of the best techno-price ratios on the market. Is this confirmed with use? Answer in this comprehensive test.

Design: a beautiful baby

As I mentioned in my grip, the Mi 10T Pro is not a conventional smartphone. Large (165.1 x 76.4 x 9.33 mm) and heavy (218 g). One-handed use can therefore sometimes be perilous, so I advise you to equip yourself with a shell (the manufacturer provides one in the box) even if Xiaomi has taken the precaution of covering his phone with a Corning Gorilla 5 protection glass.

This small accessory will also avoid turning the back of the smartphone into a fingerprint nest. The shiny glass coating may be very elegant, but it seems to have a pathological love for fingerprints.

The photo module adopts 2020 standards and takes the form of a black rectangle positioned in the upper left corner. Small peculiarity: the main sensor of 108 megapixels is particularly impressive. I would also have liked better integration, since it protrudes more than 2mm from the hull.

Before, Xiaomi opts for a rather classic screen integration. The flat panel is surrounded by rather inconspicuous black borders, with the possible exception of the (very) slightly prominent chin. The front camera is housed in the upper left corner. Classic I tell you.

Also classic is the integration of the different elements: USB-C, speaker and nano-SIM slot are combined on the lower edge, the power button and volume keys on the right border.

Small peculiarity of this Mi 10T Pro, the fingerprint reader is housed under the on / off button. Xiaomi is therefore abandoning the sensor mode under the glass of the display. Very responsive, the fingerprint reader does its job perfectly. Fans of facial recognition will be able to rely on the front sensor to unlock the smartphone. Please note, this is a 2D system, less secure.

Although heavy and imposing, the Mi 10T Pro is no less elegant. Xiaomi therefore makes a very correct copy, without artifice, and adopts all the standards of 2020. All? Not quite : the Mi 10T Pro does not carry any waterproof certification.

Screen and audio

To contain costs (and therefore the final price), Xiaomi replaces the OLED panel of the Mi 10 with 6.67-inch LCD screen on the Mi 10T Pro. A rather clever technical choice insofar as the manufacturer masters the calibration of this type of panel very well.

The screen (TÜV Rheinland certified for eye protection) displays content in Full HD (2400 x 1080 pixels). Technologies TrueColor (adapts colorimetry to the environment) and MEMC (to make videos smoother) complete the package. Xiaomi promises a DeltaE of 0.63, a contrast ratio of 1500: 1 and a maximum brightness of 650 nits. These figures, far from reaching those of a good OLED panel, are still very good.

It results an excellent screen, perfectly calibrated and pleasant to watch on a daily basis regardless of the type of use (game, video, navigation, etc.).
I have only one complaint about the display quality: the Sunlight Mode 3.0 supposed to improve brightness outdoors does not keep its promises. Also the Mi 10T Pro lacks readability in direct sunlight or under a white sky.

Nothing alarming, as Xiaomi has reserved a nice surprise. Its screen has a 144Hz refresh rate! Everything is associated with technology AdaptiveSync which adapts the refresh rate to the displayed content. A good way to provide a perfectly fluid screen while limiting power consumption (more on this).

We don't talk much about it and yet it greatly contributes to ease of use: the haptic engine chosen by Xiaomi is particularly successful. A daily treat.

During its presentation conference, Xiaomi promised that the Mi 10T Pro is equipped with one of the most powerful LCD screens on the market. Promise kept. In my opinion, The Mi 10T Pro's display is the best LCD screen around.

Very good sound quality

Add to that good audio quality. Stereo speakers deliver decent sound. With the lack of a 3.5mm jack, Xiaomi is one of the last manufacturers to provide a jack to USB-C adapter.

With headphones, listening improves in quality with better sound spatialization. In addition, MIUI 12 incorporates a 7-band equalizer allowing you to adjust everything. The gist is there.

Performance and interface

Unlike many of its competitors, Xiaomi doesn't sacrifice performance on the altar of price. A strategy also adopted by realme with its X50 Pro. So, the Mi 10T Pro comes with the Snapdragon 865, high-end processor from Qualcomm, coupled to the X55 5G modem, 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

I will not dwell on this point, reading the technical sheet is quite telling. With this arsenal of state-of-the-art components, the Mi 10T Pro is obviously effective for all everyday uses.

Fast and fluid, it will also allow players to chain games together, including on the most demanding licenses (Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile) with the highest graphics configurations. Best of all, the large frame allows the heat to dissipate efficiently, so you will never experience discomfort from heating. What more ?

MIUI 12: Android with a twist of iOS

The Mi 10T Pro embeds MIUI 12, the new software from Xiaomi unveiled in May 2020, with Android 10. This new version marks a major evolution of the interface with a completely revised graphic charter and new animations and transitions.

MIUI 12 takes the basics of Android but its design is clearly inspired by iOS. The notifications bar is now divided into two parts: swipe from the left half and you will access notifications, do the same gesture from the right half and you will have access to the control center. The latter looks a lot like that of the iPhone.

Make no mistake, MIUI 12 is embracing the Android philosophy more than ever. Proof, the app drawer is finally available! Xiaomi also provides a whole bunch of Google apps in addition to those imposed by the US in all Android smartphones.

MIUI 12 is very pleasant to use on a daily basis. If I have been very harsh with Xiaomi's OS in the past, I can safely say today that MIUI 12 is a great version of Android.

However, some elements remain to be improved to come up against OxygenOS from OnePlus (absolute reference in my opinion). For example, the automatic virus scan every time you install an application is always annoying. While it is possible to disable this feature in the settings, offering it by default does not seem particularly appropriate to me.

I also regret that Super Wallpapers widely promoted by Xiaomi are not readily available. To access it, you will have to do some manual research that is far from intuitive.

Finally, developers have not always been careful with the integration of translations, so it is not uncommon for elements to overlap on the screen. For example, "Control Center" is stuck to the settings icon in Control Center. Small flaws, certainly, but which, once corrected, will allow MIUI 12 to go from excellent OS to reference software.

Autonomy and recharging

The imposing format of the Mi 10T Pro has a big advantage: it contains a huge 5000 mAh battery. Enough to easily last two days for versatile use, all with a screen refresh rate of 144 Hz (adaptive). You would have understood it, the Mi 10T Pro shatters all autonomy records.

test xiaomi mi10t pro recharge - Mi 10T Pro review: Xiaomi Mi everyone agrees - lemon squeezer

Not content with providing the most enduring smartphone at the moment, Xiaomi delivers it with a 33 W charger embedding MMT technology. Basically, the charging speed is 17% faster than a conventional 33W charger.

The Mi 10T Pro fully charges in just over an hour and up to 50% in about 30 minutes. It’s not the fastest charger on the market, but it still performs very well. Only small disappointment: wireless charging is listed for absent subscribers. For this price, we unfortunately cannot have everything. "You have to know how to make sacrifices" said dear Edouard.

Camera

Xiaomi is taking no risks and opts for a trio of sensors that he knows well. Thus, the Mi 10T Pro integrates:

  • A wide-angle: f / 1.69 lens aperture; 82 ° field of view; 108 MP sensor (1 / 1.33 ”, 1.6 μm photosite); Super pixels 4 in 1 (pixel bining); optical stabilizer
  • An ultra wide-angle: f / 2.4 lens aperture; field of view up to 123 °; 13 MP sensor
  • A macro: f / 2.4 lens aperture; autofocus 2-10 cm; 5M sensor

Two things will undoubtedly have caught your attention. The first is the presence of a macro lens, very trendy in 2020. However, its interest seems very limited, the results obtained with this 5 megapixel sensor being much less convincing than a photo taken from further away in 2x zoom. The Mi 10T Pro is doing quite well, but the value of this additional sensor is seriously questioned.

This is all the more regrettable as Xiaomi could have incorporated a telephoto lens. Except that the cost of such a lens is not the same. The manufacturer performs a nice maneuver by opting for a main sensor of 108 megapixels.

This allows him to offer 2x hybrid zoom (cropped in the image) which has nothing to envy to the telephoto lenses of the competitors. On the other hand, the 5x zoom begins to show the limits of this little software pirouette. The 10x zoom remains acceptable, the 30x should be banned as the results are unusable.

The main module is very attractive in good light conditions (excellent sharpness, good level of contrast, colorimetry close to reality) but not only. The Mi 10T Pro stands out from its competitors by its ability to shoot very convincing night photos. If the light sources tend to materialize as a slightly too visible halo, the whole is more than correct. In any case, better than the competition.

The portrait mode is just as effective with very clean clipping and progressive bokeh. Be careful with backlights though, as digital processing has the unfortunate tendency to burn the background.

1602840635870 - Mi 10T Pro review: Xiaomi Mi everyone agrees - lemon squeezer

The ultra wide angle is the only real weak point of this photographic arsenal. If the distortion is rather controlled, the shots lose too much detail and the contrasts are too marked. This results in an overall rendering that is too different from the main sensor. Night mode does not work with ultra wide angle, which reinforces the difference in low light results.

The Mi 10T Pro stands out above all for its multiple shooting modes. Xiaomi provides a nice toolbox for effects and other functions, each more attractive than the last. For example, a sky that is too gray can be replaced by another from dozens of pre-installed “false skies”. The "Clone" function is undoubtedly the most fun of all: you can appear several times on the same plan. And it also works on video!

The video, precisely, is another strong point of this Mi 10T Pro. If stabilization is not among the references, it remains very acceptable. Above all, the smartphone can shoot up to 8K at 30 fps. The shooting options are again multiple and will stimulate your creativity.

Finally, the front sensor of 20 megapixels (with wide-angle lens f / 2.2) is effective. The self-portrait mode has the same qualities and the same defects as the portrait. Beware of backdrops therefore.

By its overall photographic quality and its multiple functionalities, The Mi 10T Pro's camera is arguably one of the best in its class. If the ultra-wide angle is difficult to convince, you can take comfort in the quality and the multiple video options. A very good vintage.

My opinion

It's hard not to fall for this Mi 10T Pro. After a more expensive Mi 10 Pro, Xiaomi reassures its fans and offers a model with almost unbeatable value for money. “Almost” because the competition is fierce: the OnePlus 8T is undoubtedly its most serious rival (especially with its 120 Hz OLED screen and OxygenOS) but the Mi 10T Pro dominates it on the photographic part. The realme X50 Pro is also a competitor to watch out for although this newcomer does not enjoy the same popularity as Xiaomi.

This Mi 10T Pro is therefore an excellent smartphone in many ways. Its excellent battery life, top-flight performance, fast charging, 144 Hz LCD screen and photography skills make it a new benchmark in this price segment. To contain costs, Xiaomi has to make some sacrifices (no OLED panel, no wireless charging, no waterproofing, massive format). Small weaknesses largely offset by his many other talents.
