All the lights are green for Carlos Tavares. The highly influential PSA boss won the BFM 2019 Manager of the Year award for a great year. On stage, he was obviously asked about this merger expected between PSA and Fiat-Chrysler.
"What especially weighed is a common vision of the opportunity," explains the winner. "These two companies have a number of similarities that are quite remarkable: both of them have experienced great difficulties, they have seen the death of both, they have both been able to recover by the strength of its employees and its leaders … (…) And both have the collective intelligence, after recovering, to understand that we will be stronger together than separately. " And to summarize: "This opportunity is huge."
Look tirelessly for performance
But the stake of this huge merger scares him, when we know the difficulties of Fiat, especially on the European market? "The main fear we have in our PSA executive committee is the fear of getting bored," he said, assuring that he and his associates would continue "tirelessly looking for performance" to become a global giant.
Beyond boredom, "that makes sense for the sustainability of the company," he says. "We face challenges where, obviously, to overcome them, we will have to use the size effect, for example, to be able to buy electric car batteries at competitive prices. , to dilute the colossal research and development efforts we are making. " And "this difficulty" that is promised to his group is "for us, a real fun," he says. Carlos tavares also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the employees of PSA but also to the social partners, which he praised the "maturity" and "clairvoyance." Finally, he wished to salute Louis Gallois, current chairman of the supervisory board of PSA.
