Mercedes-Benz factories worldwide will achieve CO2 neutrality by 2022, the German automaker announced on Monday.
The previous target only covered Mercedes-Benz factories in Europe. Now, all of the brand's more than 30 car and light truck assembly plants worldwide, as well as its battery production sites, are expected to achieve this goal by 2022, according to the company.
"We are looking at the entire value chain, from the supplier network and from production to the product itself," said Ola Källenius, chairman of the board of Daimler and Mercedes-Benz.
In a first step towards carbon-neutral production, the emissions from vehicle production and the power supply to factories will be "systematically reduced" or "entirely avoided" whenever possible, according to the automaker.
To achieve this transition, Mercedes-Benz will continue to improve its energy efficiency, increase its use of green energies and achieve a sustainable supply of heat for its production sites, the company announced. F
