From the very admission of Mercedes-Benz, there were too many versions and products in the range. So it is for the model year 2021 that we have cleaned up. The SL takes a break, the S-Class coupes and convertibles disappear and the E-Class wagon adopts off-road styling.
Too many models, too much proximity, too high production costs. That’s Mercedes-Benz’s assessment of it when looking at its lineup for the 2021 model year. A lot of cleaning was needed, and it’s now being done.
Although the Classes, for the most part, are being carried over with only a few small changes here and there, others are more specifically targeted: the S-Class in particular, the one that sits at the top of the range. A whole new generation will be unveiled this week with the sedan. Since 2015, the S once again offered a coupe and a convertible. The success of these variants was evident, but Mercedes-Benz has other plans for this segment. Following the 2021 model year, it will be the end of the two-door S-Class.
Mercedes-Benz explains this decision by the arrival of a new generation of the legendary SL 2022. The latter is on hiatus for 2021. This is hardly surprising as sales have been plummeting for years. With the next SL, Mercedes-Benz will be able to play with its configuration, in particular by returning with the possibility of offering it to 4 seats as on the R107 generation. This way, although the SL is considerably less spacious, it will fill some of the void. It should not be forgotten that Mercedes-Benz also offers the E-Class in a convertible version.
The E-Class gets upgraded for the 2021 model year. We've already covered this news. However, we now learn the withdrawal of the E-Class in its traditional family form. In fact, it will be replaced by the long awaited All Terrain version sold in Europe for a few years. The formula is simple, it is a slightly elevated variation that adopts an SUV air like Volvo's with the CrossCountry or, even, the Audi Allroad. It should be noted that the AMG E63 and E63S versions will remain in the catalog.
