Andreas Seidl arrived in May at McLaren, and the German has already made several important decisions. He started the construction of a new wind tunnel, and signed for 2021 with Mercedes for the engine supply. He explains why the Mercedes team, led by Toto Wolff, is an example.
"What Toto did with his team is unique" recalls Seidl. "They are the benchmark for our sport, both on the team and the engine side, which is why it was my goal to have a world champion engine in the future."
Nevertheless, he does not expect to have good results immediately: "Our goal is to annoy Toto and Mercedes at one time, but at the same time, you have to be realistic about what can be accomplished in the next few years."
Seidl has taken over a legendary team that has been going through a difficult time since 2012, but he assures that it's a motivation, and he hopes to bring the team back to its former level, aiming for podiums and victories in three or four years.
"We want to go back to Formula One with this team, with the involvement of Zak (Brown) and the owners, and with the investments we are doing like the wind tunnel, we want to sign regular podiums and hopefully victories in 2022 or 2023. "
