McLaren: F1 cars' wind sensitivity problem 'feared' – F1 | Formula 1 – Urban Fusions

McLaren boss Andreas Seidl says his team's 2020 Formula 1 car is so affected by the wind sensitivity issues.

While the MCL35 has been strong enough to help McLaren currently sit third in the Constructors' Championship, the team's season has been affected by the weather.

In particular, Carlos Sainz Jr and Lando Norris have a hard time familiarizing themselves with the car if there is a strong tailwind – especially in qualifying when the time gap between the cars is so close.

Sainz said recently that wind problems were at the root of McLaren’s struggles at Mugello and Sochi.

Reflecting on what happened at the Russian Grand Prix, Sainz said: “We had a lot of tailwind in the first section, and all of a sudden our car was out of the sweet spot. And we suffered a lot more with the car's balance. problems. "

He added: “I don’t like to speak publicly about the problems we have in our car, but we know we have a sensitivity to wind. (issue), and we feel that it affected us a lot at Mugello.

“But I don't want to blame it. I don't mean that this is the main cause, or that it affects us more than others, because everyone is affected by the wind. "

As the team places their hopes for progress on an aero package that will be based on their new nose concept, Seidl said technical director James Key and his team will try to resolve the issue of wind sensitivity.

"I certainly don't want to take it, and it's something we've seen last year already," Seidl said. “I think we've taken a step forward with this year's car, but it's obviously still something that's pretty high on the list for James, in terms of further improvements.

“As we've seen (in Russia) it can quickly change our car from a very competitive car to a less competitive car, which sucks. "

Understanding how gusty wind conditions can impact downforce is a complicated question for teams to resolve, but Seidl said McLaren gave it some priority.

“It’s easy to see the problem, but it’s obviously a very complex subject to solve,” he said. “But again, that's pretty high up on James's list of topics. And that's what we're working on. "
