McLaren will sign his return full-time IndyCar next year, and signed drivers Patricio O'Ward (pictured left), who was at Red Bull this year, and Oliver Askew (right), Indy Lights champion 2019. But Zak Brown admits that both drivers could have a chance at driving an F1 in 2020.
"Although F1 and IndyCar are separate projects, they are complementary commercially" says Brown. "We do not have a young driver under contract for 2020, so I would not be surprised to see one of these guys in one of our F1s for a beginner test."
Sergio Sette Câmara is still under contract but does not seem to be part of McLaren's plans. Brown also explains that this was the case of James Hinchcliffe, who had signed with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and was eventually sidelined when the team became Arrow McLaren SP (pictured).
"We made the decision knowing that there would be James's dissatisfied fans, and there were, but we also know that many people are happy to see the last two Indy Lights champions form the youngest duo. . "
"In the end, we did what was best for the team, and that's not necessarily the most popular decision, and for me, the most important thing is that everyone welcomes Oliver and Pato and what I've seen, there are just as many disappointed fans as fans excited about our duet. "
