Mamma Mia! A 4 cylinder Maserati! It is with these words that I begin the test of this new Maserati Ghibli 4 cylinder hybrid 330 hp as the arrival of this engine divides. Between those for whom Maserati is above all an inimitable sound and those who accept this engine with open arms because of the increasingly punitive penalties.

To make up my own mind, I was able to try for a day the Maserati Ghibli hybrid, in a GranSport finish, in Sables-d’Olonne.

Maserati Ghibli Hybrid GranSport: presentation!

Let’s start with presentation of this Maserati Ghibli hybrid.

The look of this almost 5-meter sedan ages well. Remember that it was presented in 2013 and that, year after year, it has been improved by Maserati both inside and out, and in equipment. Proof of this is concerning the exterior look, it has never stopped receive thumbs up and friendly signs when passing, even from the police (it will not avoid you fines, do not dream). In addition to being beautiful, it benefits from the brand’s very good sympathy capital.

The most visible novelty on the outside are the new taillights which, lit, make a nod to the iconic Maserati 3200 GT by designer Giugiaro. To wonder why they did not launch it like this from the beginnings of the Ghibli! The GranSport finish is very stylish: sport front bumper, 20 ″ rims, sport seats, sport steering wheel, red brake calipers…

On board, very high-end materials

The interior is beautiful, a mix of luxury and sport. The door handles are elegantly integrated, the Zegna braided leather upholstery is the most beautiful effect, the dashboard highlights the new infotainment system, we are in a very high-end sedan. It can be seen with the eye, it can be felt by touching the materials.

Focus on the new multimedia system. It will not stop having evolved from year to year and here is the all new Maserati Connect and its 10.1 ″ touchscreen. Finally a complete interface, high definition screen, fluid and complete interface, TomTom mapping, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, etc. Finally at the level of competition!

Finally, for the practical side, I noted that the 500L trunk is a good capacity for its category and that the rear seats are folding. It is always good to know.

Back to 4 cylinders

This might surprise you, 4-cylinder Maseratis there have already been in the brand’s sporting history. There is for example the Maserati 4CL with its 1.5L 200 hp engine, the Maserati 4CLT and its 1.5L 260 hp piloted by Juan Manuel Fangio, or the Maserati Tipo 60 and its 2.0L 4-cylinder 200 hp which won the Rouen Grand Prix in 1959, and finally the Maserati Tipo 61, its 4 cylinder 2.9L 260 hp and its driver Stirling Moss who won a race in 1960 at the Nurburgring ahead of Ferraris, Porsches, and Aston Martin….

If this can convince the purists, 4 cylinders there have already been in competition, whether at Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and other brands. All the victorious pilots aboard these racing machines seemed to be less resistant.

Maserati 4CTL sound

The 4-cylinder has, I grant you, a less exciting sound than a V6, V8, V12, but it is not in opposition to the brand’s sporting history at the Trident.

Technically, the Ghibli’s mild hybrid engine is a combination of 2.0L 4 cylinder and 48V electric motor. They both offer a power of 330 hp and torque of 450 Nm. This system recharges itself when braking or decelerating, the energy of the battery is requested during acceleration to provide more power. Note that all this power is sent to the rear wheels, it is a propulsion.

Versatile road behavior

This 2.0L 4-cylinder 330 hp hybrid engine replaces the 275 hp V6 diesel. Lighter with this engine, and despite the weight of the electric motor and the batteries, the Ghibli hybrid is more efficient than the V6 diesel version and almost as efficient as the 3.0L V6 petrol version of 350 hp.

On a daily basis, this gives a comfortable and quiet sedan in town and on major highways. In normal driving, I am between 8 and 9 L / 100 km of consumption. Once the “sport” button pressed, the exhaust changes tone for a noise that is both hoarse and muffled. That is to say loud enough to make a more powerful noise when accelerating and when changing gear, but much quieter than an Akrapovic that we would find at Abarth for example. In sport mode, even if we feel that it is not a pure sport with these 1.8 tonnes empty on the scale, the Skyhook suspensions, the Brembo brakes and the ZF 8-speed gearbox offer reassuring dynamic driving.

Prices for the Ghibli hybrid against the competition

Of all the competition, Maserati is the only brand to have opted for the MHEV light hybrid technology against rechargeable hybrid PHEV for the others. MHEV compared to PHEV saves weight and space, however, it is not possible to drive several kilometers entirely electric. Co2 emissions are also affected.

Conclusion: a welcome 4-cylinder hybrid Ghibli

This Maserati Ghibli 4-cylinder hybrid, by replacing the V6 diesel engine (which also made a “noise” when it was released), allowsexpand the range.

Ranging from the 4-cylinder hybrid 330 hp, through the V6 350 and 430 hp and up to the V8 580, the Ghibli can satisfy all buyers, for all uses. If you can take a V6 or V8, it’s another sound experience! But thanks to this 4 cylinders, it is repositioning itself in front of competitors which also offer 4-cylinder hybrid engines. And you know it now, the 4 cylinder is not blasphemy.
