She is very lonely, but she is present this season in GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS. Tech 1 Racing had warned: 2019 was the learning year with the Lexus RC F GT3. The only Lexus on the grid rose in one season from Am-class to the Silver Cup. Both at Imola in Endurance and at Misano in Sprint, we saw and saw the Lexus in the leading positions again, but a black cat has stuck in the cockpit of the Japanese GT in Italy.
At Imola, a competitor blocked the Lexus in the pits and then a drive through could not do better than a 4th place in Silver for Aurélien Panis, Thomas Neubauer and Timothé Buret. The Lexus had started from pole. Bis repeated at Misano with two pole positions in three qualifying, this time in the general. Race 1 ended with an engine problem, race 2 with a 5th place in Silver after starting from the back of the grid following the change of engine. The last race ended after the Lexus was harpooned by a Bentley. Loïc David, head of the competition-customer program at Lexus, hopes that the black cat has remained in Italy. Now it's time for the Nürburgring with great ambitions.
“We have three young people who want to win races”, warns Loïc David. “All three have the same desire to win. They work like crazy for it. I cannot be clearer. The trio is homogeneous and united. It's good to see the next generation arrive. "
Tech 1 Racing can benefit from the work done in 2019: “The work of the past year has allowed us to break in and put a lot of things in place. Tech 1 Racing is here. There was bad luck in the pits at Imola, the destructive yellow bananas of Misano which damaged the engine. There, it is no longer security, but danger. It’s not good for the GT as a lot of teams have left their mark. We are not in a single-seater. ”
During the winter there was hard work between Europe and Japan: “The car made good progress during the winter, but we cannot speak of an evolution. It’s a combined work of Lexus, Tech 1 and the drivers. Tech 1 Racing did a crazy job. We're now waiting for someone to come and pick up the black cat. "
The current performance of the Lexus on both sides of the Atlantic does not leave indifferent. Tech 1 Racing has a second chassis ready to run as soon as a crew is secure. Other teams are inquiring about the RC F GT3.
Unlike other GT3s, the Lexus RC F GT3 copes quite well with the new Pirelli compounds as Loïc David confirms: “The overall package makes the Lexus good. The car reacts very well to the new tires. The start of the season is promising, but now we need at least a podium. ”
Aurélien Panis and Timothé Buret had already driven the Lexus last year, unlike Thomas Neubauer who drove a Mercedes: “Thomas is in his second year in GT and he's having a blast in the car. When you see that, you know the direction is right. The Lexus is the only Japanese car on the grid in Europe and we want to wear the colors of Japan high. ”
