Lamborghini took a third British GT victory in as many heats as Sandy Mitchell and Rob Collard (# 78 Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo) won after two hours at Brands Hatch in Kent.
The car started second on the grid after qualifying on Saturday August 29, 2020 and maintained that position for the opening hour as Michael O’Brien and James Baldwin’s McLaren led the way. However, two safety car hits brought the field together, giving Collard the perfect time to take the pit stop to make the mandatory driver change to hand over to Mitchell.
The British duo took advantage of a bizarre incident where a racing vehicle ended up descending the pit lane as the cars came to a stop, to emerge ahead of the pack before the second restart. Despite the somewhat fortuitous head start, young Lamborghini GT3 driver Mitchell pulled away from O'Brien's McLaren by a slim margin of just over half a second.
That figure dropped to a fraction of a second in a second and a half at the start of the final 10 minutes of the race, before the young Scotsman was under pressure as he slowed down traffic in GT4 cars. Thankfully, Mitchell’s Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo largely eluded the leading battle for GT4 honors in the dying minutes, and Barwell claimed his first race victory of the season so far.
It was Barwell's second victory in three rounds, having won the 2nd race on the opening weekend at Oulton Park. Behind Mitchell and Collard, Lamborghini factory driver Franck Perera and his teammate Michael Igoe took a precious sixth place finish in their WPI Motorsport Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo – which last won at Donington Park – to boost their title chances .
The next round of the British GT Championship will take place on the weekend of September 19-20, 2020, for the second meeting at Donington Park.
