The case of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro may be lightened with a new accessory: the EarPods wired headphones will fall through the cracks this year. The decision would be motivated by economic considerations against the background of the crisis. The manufacturer may not be able to do this in Europe, however, due to highly protective regulations on exposure to the waves.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is preparing to remove a new accessory from the box of future iPhone 12. After having recently removed the Lightning to audio jack adapter. It must be said thatApple has never stood out for its generosity when it comes to the accessories included with its iPhones, unlike many Android competitors who can sometimes provide in addition to everything already offered by Apple with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, the famous USB-C dongle to audio jack, earbuds of different sizes, other cables, OTG adapter or even a glass and a protective shell, 100 balls and a Mars.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the explanation is linked to the economic context. Apple is indeed entering a complicated period with the threat of sanctions in China which oblige it now to anticipate the worst, and an international economic context in veritable depression, against the background of measures to combat the coronavirus. Not including headphones will have two main effects. First, it lowers production costs. Including or not an accessory in the box of a product means that it is necessary to adapt the production lines, which represents a cost. And suddenly, not doing it, allows Apple to slightly strengthen its margins.
The other effect is that it will naturally drive sales of EarPods (wired headphones) purchased separately. But also and above all another Apple flagship product, the AirPods and AirPods Pro. Ming-Chi Kuo has revised its sales estimates for AirPods for the year 2020 from 80 to 93 million units. However, we already know that Apple will not unveil a new revision of the AirPods or AirPods Pro until the end of the year. Suddenly Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple could also lower the price of its headphones when the iPhone 12 is released to further boost sales.

It remains to be seen whether the firm will actually be able to remove the EarPods from the boxes of iPhone 12 sold in European Union countries. The regulations are very protective of consumers in terms of exposure to the waves. In France, paragraph I of article L34-9 of the Post and Electronic Communications Code (which transposes it) states: "Radio terminals intended to be connected to a network open to the public for the provision of telephony service cannot be marketed without an accessory making it possible to limit the exposure of the head to radioelectric emissions during communications". A role previously played by headphones.
