Apple is organizing its big back-to-school conference on Tuesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. (French time). For the first time in the history of the group, the iPhone should not be the flagship of the event. The keynote should focus on the Apple Watch, the iPad Air and maybe some surprise products.
According to the latest information from the specialized press, the presentation of the iPhone 12, the first with 5G connectivity, will instead take place this fall, most likely in October, on the occasion of a second dedicated event.
The coronavirus health crisis got the better of the release schedule for the new iPhones. Apple has already confirmed that they will not be launched in September. Specialists are counting on a two-step launch, between October and November.
Despite the weakening global economy and the pandemic, Apple does not expect sales of its flagship product to decline. According to the Bloomberg agency, the Californian group would have ordered 75 million units from its providers. A volume equivalent to last year.
Four models expected this fall
According to several American media, four models compatible with 5G should be marketed by the end of the year. Two classic iPhone 12 to succeed the iPhone 11 and two iPhone 12 Pro, each available in two different screen sizes. Here is how the future range should be structured:
– iPhone 12 with 5.4 inch screen
– iPhone 12 Max with 6.1 inch screen
– iPhone 12 Pro with 6.1-inch screen at 120 Hz
– iPhone 12 Pro Max with 6.7-inch screen at 120 Hz
For the first time, all four models should be entitled to an Oled screen. This technology was reserved for Pro versions until now. But only the Pro versions should be entitled to a refreshed screen at 120 Hz, the classic versions being satisfied with an Oled screen at 60 Hz.
A higher refresh rate is the assurance for the user to benefit frombetter visual comfort with faster scrolling and smoother animations. At 60 images per second, on most smartphones, movements are more jerky. The more we go down in frequency, the less they seem real.
The Pro versions would host the ProMotion technology of the latest iPad Pro which dynamically adapts the refresh rate to the content displayed on the screen in order to offer a high refresh when it comes to scrolling an article or scrolling the menus of the desktop then a screen at 60 or 45 Hz when nothing happens to save battery.
A more square design
Apple is expected to introduce some design changes and offer a frame very inspired by the iPhone 4 and 5, with squarer edges than on previous versions. The borders around the screen should be more contained and the notch, which houses the components of the Face ID facial recognition, should be more refined. A midnight blue color could replace the green of the current generation.
All four models will certainly benefit from the new Apple A14 chip. Engraved in 5 nm, it would offer improved performance by 15%. The classic versions could be offered with 64 GB of storage in initial configuration while the high-end models would ship a base of 128 GB.
According to the supposed device certification documents, the iPhone 12 would be entitled to a 2,227 mAh battery compared to 2,775 mAh for the iPhone 12 Max and iPhone 12 Pro and 3,687 mAh for the Pro Max version. In order not to pass the cost of 5G on to its customers, Apple may not provide a charger and headphones in the box of the iPhone 12 upon purchase.
What novelties in photos?
On the photo side, the classic versions of the iPhone 12 should retain the dual camera module wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle of the iPhone 12. The Pro versions should benefit from a triple camera and welcome a Lidar sensor deep, like the last iPad Pro. In addition to offering better augmented reality experiences, this sensor would also improve low-light shots with faster autofocus and enhanced image stabilization.
