The iPhone 12 generation will also have an "iPhone XR" except that this year Apple seems to have decided to change its name again to adopt the name "iPhone 12s". The new model would nevertheless be launched in a second phase, during the second quarter of 2021.
To believe the information of a leaker, taken up by the PhoneArena blog, the launch of the next iPhone 12 will indeed depart from the well-oiled mechanics of recent years. For weeks we have known that Apple – like large parts of the industry around the world – has been impacted by plant closures linked to the coronavirus. Suggesting a commercial launch of future iPhone 12 delayed by a few weeks, even if a priori the presentation keynote will be held in the usual window.
iPhone 12: a two-step launch is confirmed
Thus, according to the leaker Koyima, this year we would have a marketing in two stages. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro would therefore be on sale between Q4 2020 and Q1 2021. Apple would offer the new devices alongside the cheaper iPhone 11, iPhone XR and iPhone SE 2020. Between Q2 and Q4 2021, the iPhone XR is set to disappear from the catalog to be replaced by a mysterious "iPhone 12s" – which seems to present itself as the next most accessible model, even though Apple has in the past reserved the "S" for more powerful intermediate versions.
Or a mid-size phone with features close to the iPhone 12 Pro, but still lacking a few features. The iPhone 12s would then be sold alongside the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2020 and the iPhone XR launched in 2018 would no longer be available on Apple's website. According to PhoneArena, the iPhone 12s is actually the famous 4G model that has been talked about for several months – while all other iPhone 12s have 5G. The model might only be discussed at best during the September / October keynote.
