(iOS 13, iOS 14) The test copy of iOS 14 recovered by the American site 91mobiles is said to come from an iPhone 11 illegally sold in China.
(Updated Monday 25 May 2020 at 3:45 p.m.) Since last February, 91mobiles has unveiled a number of new things supposed to be introduced with iOS 14. The new version of the mobile system must be presented by Apple in preview on June 22nd during WWDC 2020. We now know a little more about the supposed origin of this copy. According to Motherboard, it comes from an iPhone 11 development acquired in China by an enthusiast for several thousand dollars. Dating from December 2019, the version of iOS 14 integrated into the device would then have been released by the latter via the internet.
Unofficial information is multiplying on what could reserve iOS 14 which, let us recall, will equip the next models of iPhone. Code name: Azul. Supporting video, 91mobiles claims to have recovered in February 2020 a preview of iOS 14. It reveals several possible new features:
- Multitasking mode. Instead of scrolling through the applications one by one, a new multitasking mode inspired by that of the iPad should make it possible to display scrollable suites of four applications juxtaposed on the same screen.
- List of applications. Like what is already offered on Apple Watch, Apple could introduce the possibility of viewing all installed applications in the form of a list. It should provide access to statistics on their use and their associated notifications.
- Widgets on the home screen. The iOS 14 home screen could be equipped with widgets that can be moved dynamically like application icons.
- Fitness app. Apple was working on a brand new fitness app. Code name: Seymour. Designed for iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, it could be officially called Fitness or more simply Fit. Running, biking, weight training, dancing, walking … Covering a multitude of physical activities, it should allow you to define objectives before monitoring them via the Apple Watch.
- Augmented reality application. Another brick that could appear with iOS 14 according to 91mobiles: an augmented reality application. Its use would be tested in Apple Stores and Starbucks cafes. From the QR code scan of the products, it would give access to information on these products in augmented reality.
- Clips. Also discovered in the code unearthed by 91mobiles, a feature, called Clips, is designed to access the content of an application without having to install it. The user would only have to scan their QR code to access the content, before installing the application if they wish. Apple would test Clips in conjunction with several players including Yelp, Youtube or Sony. Android is already equipped with an equivalent device (the Slices) which allows access to the content of an application from the search engine of Google or Google Assistant.
Faced with the multiple bugs encountered in iOS 12 and iOS 13, Apple would have decided to review during the development of iOS 14 its beta-test processes. According to Bloomberg, the group could deactivate by default the unfinished or buggy features in the preview versions of future iOS 14 updates. The beta testers should nevertheless be able to selectively activate these functions via "a new process internal and a new settings menu, called Flags, allowing them to isolate the impact of each. " As part of this quality approach, Apple would even study the possibility of postponing certain functionalities initially planned for iOS 14 with a view to integrating them into iOS 15, which should be released in 2021. Objective for the group: give themselves more time to optimize mobile system performance. If we follow this reasoning, some of the features present in the test version of iOS 14 recovered by 91mobiles may not be integrated into the final version of the new opus. Third-party sources also mention other potential developments:
- CarKey. Appeared in the source code of iOS 13.4, the CarKey API is designed to remotely control the locking, unlocking and starting of a car. All via the NFC protocol (for near field communication). The interface must also allow the right to use the vehicle to be shared with relatives. This functionality should probably be formalized with the launch of iOS 14. Foxconn employees, the main Chinese equipment supplier that Apple uses to assemble its iPhones, has posted screenshots on its Twitter account suggesting that this functionality is being tested by BMW.
- iMessage is inspired by Slack. According to MacRumors, iOS instant messaging will allow you to tag a person in a conversation via the @ mention to request their attention via an alert. Other developments to come in iMessage according to MacRumors: the possibility of retracting after sending a message, marking a message as unread to draw attention to it, or even viewing who writes in a group chat via a new multi-user input icon.
- Change the default applications. Apple would consider letting users modify the applications offered by default in iOS for the first time: Mail, Safari … Dixit Bloomberg. If this information is confirmed, iPhone owners would then be free to replace native software with alternatives of their choice.
- Xcode for iOS and iPadOS. Apple's development environment could be ported to iOS and iPadOS when version 14 of the two Apple systems is released.
As with each launch of a new version of iOS, graphic designers began to imagine what could give the future version via conceptual videos. One of them imagines the extension of the Split View function, already present on iPadOS, to iOS. This would allow two applications to run on the iPhone screen in parallel, for example a video player and a note taking application. Another graphic designer anticipates the possibility of opening apps by dragging and dropping or of choosing more freely where to place the icons on the home screen. As for the youtubeur Brandon Le Proktor, he is considering the possibility of automatically routing a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (etc.) link to the corresponding native application or even to display notifications directly in the applications icon. Created by a Frenchman, one of the latest conceptual videos to date highlights still other possibilities in images: always-in display, widget … (see the video below).
Each year, Apple releases a new major version of iOS. 2020 will not escape the rule. iOS 14 should be presented in preview at WWDC 2020. The company's conference for developers will take place on June 22. Apple has announced that it will be organized online due to the health situation linked to the Covid-19 epidemic, and that presentations will be dedicated to the future of iOS and iPadOS for the occasion. As for the release date of iOS 14, it should intervene like the previous versions of the mobile system during September 2020.
Evoking an internal source at Apple, the iphonesoft site lifts the veil on the list of iPhone and iPad that should support the future iOS 14. Unlike iOS 12 whose hardware backward compatibility was limited, iOS 14 could support the all iPhone and iPad compatible with iOS 13. But the list would not be final. Apple would indeed question the relevance of integrating the iPhone 6S and iPhone SE, models both equipped with the A9 chip. The latest entry-level devices from the Apple group such as the iPad 7 or the iPod Touch 7 being equipped with the A10 chip, this represents "only a generation of deviation", iphonesoft analysis.

- A dark mode optimized for night display, and allowing energy savings at the same time, is emerging. It can be activated from the control panel.
- The optimized app download. Until now Apple has prohibited downloading an application larger than 150 MB in cellular mode, and in this case asked to go through a wifi connection. This limit increases to 200 MB with iOS 13.
- Swipe-to-type. A swipe-to-type input device, based on the SwiftKey virtual keyboard model, is integrated for the occasion.
- The iMessage application embeds a new profile system inspired by that of WhatsApp. It allows you to add a name, a photo, and to choose the people who can access it.
- Content sharing management sees its graphical interface evolve to facilitate the sharing of photos and HTML links. Suggestions for sharing are also proposed according to the profile of the interlocutors and the frequency of exchanges.
- Sharing music. iOS 13 introduces a feature to share listening to music with other iOS devices. To benefit from it, it is necessary to have an iPhone 8 or a more recent model, but also to be equipped with earphones or a compatible headset, an Airpods or a Power Beats Pro for example.
- The revised editing tool. iOS 13 allows you to switch a video to landscape mode even if it was taken in portrait mode. The editing tool incorporates many other small improvements.
- The Reminder application has sections on the Home screen, listing "All tasks", "Tasks to do today", "Scheduled tasks", and "Completed tasks" respectively.
- The Files app is now compatible with external hard drives.
- Management of subscriptions. When deleting an application, an alert will now appear on iOS 13 to ask the user if he also wants to cancel the subscription linked to this application.
- Privacy management. With iOS 13, users can better control the geolocation of their device and the use of associated data by applications.
- The Photos app sees its redesigned interface. She will manage the support of three objectives in order to take photos or films in 3D. Another evolution, it is now equipped with a second level of tabs which makes navigation more comfortable. The photos are automatically classified according to the month and the location of the shots.
- Deep Fusion. Introduced with iOS 13.2 in November 2019, Deep Fusion optimizes, via the Camera application, the quality of the images taken with the camera of Apple smartphones. He orchestrates the combination of several photos into one to gain sharpness and fine detail. Based on a machine learning algorithm, Deep Fusion requires the A13 Bionic chip to function. It is therefore only offered on the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, the only iPhone models to integrate the processor.
- Siri. iOS 13.2 also introduces the ability to read and route messages from AirPods headphones via the Siri voice assistant. The latter has also been equipped for the occasion with a new interface designed to control the use it makes of conversation data.
- A large file sharing function. Equivalent to WeTransfer, it is based on iCloud.
- Multi-device Bluetooth synchronization. Released in November 2019, iOS 13.1 inaugurates the synchronization of Bluetooth connections to stream music from its iPhone to several media (several AirPods or several Beats PowerBeats Pro headphones for example). Other new features brought by iOS 13.1: sharing arrival times in the Plan app, support for the Ultra Wideband chip for sending files from one iPhone to another or even support for HEVC video encoding.
iOS 13.3 was released by Apple in final version in mid-December after four beta versions (see details on the Apple website). The update improves the Communication Limits parental control console, and in particular its Screen Time function. In previous versions of the OS, it already made it possible to define consumption time limits per application, content restriction rules and lists of authorized applications. iOS 13.3 introduces the possibility of authorizing or not of contacts with which to communicate. Another functional development: support for FIDO2 authentication keys in Safari.
There is also a notable ergonomic change concerning iPadOS 13.3. The update incorporates the concept of active corners from Mac OS. A concept that allows you to execute the actions of your choice, for example opening an application, by positioning your finger on one of the corners of the Apple tablet. To associate an action with a corner, go to Settings> Accessibility> Touch> Assistive Touch> then activate Waiting control> and, finally, open Active corners.
Delivered at the end of May, the iOS 13.5 update introduces the tracking and notification system in the event of risk of exposure to Covid-19 that Apple has co-developed with Google (see the tweet below). It is backed by an API (API Exposure Notification) designed to make Android and iOS devices compatible with the control applications of health authorities, which will be the only ones able to use the device. Apple and Google provide their APIs in 22 countries. France is not one of them. It did not wish to benefit from it for its StopCovid application. Another evolution launched with iOS 13.5, the Face ID identification mechanism by face recognition now detects the wearing of a mask and automatically activates the unlocking function by access code. Finally, during an emergency call, the user's medical file can be automatically transmitted to the correspondent.
Apple and Google have published their rules of conduct for publishers wishing to take advantage of their APIs to develop contract tracing applications. They are very strict. APIs can only be used by public health authorities to respond exclusively to the challenges of Covid-19. They cannot be used for advertising purposes or to collect location data. Their deployment obviously implies the agreement of the user. Finally, the two groups will only allow one application per country. The Exposure Notification API is based on the Bluetooth Low Energy only protocol to collect data.
iOS 13.3 is offered by Apple as an update since December 10, 2019 on the iPhone. Here's how to download and install:
- Check that your terminal is compatible with iOS 13.3,
- Check that your device is equipped with the latest version of iOS prior to iOS 13.3, i.e. iOS 13.2.3 (by going to Settings> General> Software update). Update it if necessary.,
- Free up disk space, if necessary, to display at least several GB of free space,
- Save your data on iTunes,
- Activate the update. To do this, it will be directly accessible via Wi-Fi via the Settings> General> Software update menus. You can also connect your device to a computer to update via iTunes. In this case, you will find the update through the sidebar of the iTunes Finder.
- Several reboots are then necessary to finalize the installation.
The operating system dedicated to the iPad is now uncorrelated from iOS and is the subject of a separate OS, called iPadOS. For the occasion, Apple is introducing several salient new features in addition to those delivered with iOS 13:
- The home screen of the iPad is similar to that of macOS. On the program: integration of tabs in applications and floating windows.
- A new Duet Display type function or Luna Display now allows users to use their iPad as a second screen from their Mac, while retaining its tactile possibilities, notably with the support of Apple Pencil.
- Download manager enriches the Safari browser. Objective: give access to all downloads made from a single page, as is the case in most web browsers.
- Widgets. The iPadOS gives the possibility of integrating widgets to its home screen by covering various fields: reminders of upcoming appointments, weather data, most frequently used applications ….
- A multitasking mode. iPadOS allows you to launch several applications that will appear in floating windows (which can be manipulated like a "card game") which can be edited. It is also possible to open the same application twice to work on two contents in parallel.
- Improved NFC support. With iOS 12, Apple had introduced in its mobile system the possibility of reading NFC tags, but with certain restrictions. With iOS 13, these restrictions are lifted. The system will be able to scan electronic passports, and interact with contactless smart cards and NFC-compatible hardware. iOS 13 can even transmit data to NFC tags.
