Infiniti may no longer be distributed in Western Europe since April 1, but the brand continues to shine on the other side of the sleeve in the iconic BTCC Supertourism Championship. A program privately run by Laser Tools Racing for the past year, the Q50 sedans are positioned as one of the strongest values of this 2020 season, with several titles in their sights. Enough to give hope for descendants to the fantastic Laguna (Renault) and Primera (Nissan), the two famous Alliance champions.
Covid-19 crisis requires, the 2020 season of the BTCC also started late. The latter only started at the beginning of August, but four meetings have already been contested out of a total of ten. Enough to draw a clear trend: Laser Tools Racing and its two Infiniti Q50s are in the game to challenge the titles this season.
It must be said that the team put all the chances on its side: not only did it attract one of the best drivers on the field, in the person of Ash Sutton, but in addition, it received the support of 'a new sponsor and has joined forces with the successful BRM structure.
The statistics speak for themselves; in 12 contested races spread over four meetings and as many qualifiers, the Infiniti Q50 took pole position, four victories to which must be added two more podiums. And when it’s not on the box, the car shines with regular entries in the top 10.
As a result, Ash Sutton finds himself in second place in the general classification, just 10 points behind the leader. Laser Tools Racing is second in the team standings, but at a respectable distance from BMW.
However, the team’s private status allows it to dominate the indie roster, with a very serious chance of adding titles to Infiniti’s, and the Alliance’s overall, charts. Ash Sutton prances to the top of the roster, with 37 units more than his runner-up. Laser Tools Racing is also the team leader with a 14 point lead.
Although now aging, the potential of the Q50 continues to unlock, confirming that this car had until then been underused, enough to approach the rest of the season with optimism. Next meeting, September 19-20 at Thruxton, for a campaign which will end on November 14-15 at Brands Hatch.
