Iliad confirms Nokia's choice for its 5G – LeMondeInformatique

The 4th French mobile phone operator Iliad will select Finnish equipment supplier Nokia for its 5G infrastructure. Its AirScale radio access technology, which also supports 4G / LTE, will be deployed in France but also in Italy to cover 17 million subscribers.

As predicted last September, the official confirmation is fall concerning the choice of Iliad to turn to Nokia for its 5G telecom infrastructure. The two companies know each other well, partners since 2012 in France and since 2018 in Italy, also concerned by this partnership. In all, 17 million subscribers are potentially concerned to switch when the time comes to this latest generation mobile technology.

"The liad group will install Nokia's latest radio access technology, AirScale, which will allow it to take advantage of the first 5G networks while supporting 4G / LTE and 5G in the same radio access system" , specifies the Finnish equipment supplier. “This versatility will allow the IIiad group to offer new services to consumers and businesses while ensuring the sustainability of the radio network. The installation of 5G MIMO antennas will allow Iliad subscribers to make the most of the ultra-low latency and high bandwidth capabilities of 5G. ”

5G base stations 60% less energy consuming

Nokia's AirScale technology supports different network topologies, from distributed, centralized and cloud RAN. In terms of benefits, the equipment manufacturer highlights its speed and ease of installation and energy savings of 60% compared to previous generation base stations as well as backward compatibility with its Flexi base station controllers.

In addition to Iliad, Nokia has also been chosen by Orange – alongside Ericsson – for the deployment of its 5G network. With in particular its Single RAN technology coupled with automation and network management tools as well as associated professional services in the West and South-East regions of France.
