As we said, this smartphone does not quite rely on the same camera equipment as the original P40 Lite. The 48 Mpx photo module has been replaced by a 64 Mpx (f / 1.8) model, and it is associated with 8 Mpx (f / 2.4) ultra-wide-angle (f / 2.4), 2 Mpx macro (f / 2.4), and a depth of 2 Mpx (f / 2.4).
Wide-angle module (64 Mpx, f / 1.8, 26mm)
A 64 Mpx module is theoretically greater display fineness than a 48 Mpx model. But the results obtained by this new model are broadly similar to those of the old one. The level of detail is roughly the same, in the center as at the edges, and the overall picture is satisfactory. The colorimetric processing is quite vivid, but the white balance is perfectly managed.
At night, the P40 Lite 5G is efficient thanks to good image processing overall. The exposure is correct, and if we notice a little electronic noise, we are generally satisfied. And we would even be tempted to say that the level of detail is a little more important than with the 4G version of the P40 Lite
64 MP mode
This is not often the case, but the 64 Mpx mode of this device can really boost the level of detail of the image. A mode that will prove to be very relevant in photographs of landscapes where the subject is motionless.
At night, however, there seems to be a problem with this mode since the level of detail is very low and well below that of the 16 Mpx mode.
Ultra wide-angle module (8 Mpx, f / 2.4, 17 mm)
The ultra wide-angle module of this mobile is moderately interesting. The exposure is good, as is the level of detail in the center, but the quality deteriorates sharply at the angles. And the image is quite distorted.
At night, the light is obviously lacking, and the level of detail is very low. Not surprisingly, however, few smartphones provide good performance in these conditions.
Front module, video and portrait mode
Up front, Huawei opted for a 16-megapixel f / 2-aperture sensor, the same as the P40 Lite’s. It offers good results, with detailed and correctly exposed images. The portrait mode is rather well done, with a fairly relevant breakdown of the subjects. Finally, the mobile can run in 1080p and we appreciate the tracking of faces.
