Even though the manufacturer managed to establish itself as the world's largest smartphone seller in the last quarter, thus pushing the unconquerable Samsung out of the first place, the brand still has many challenges to overcome in order to establish itself permanently. Huawei is still embroiled in the trade war between the United States and China, and is still forced to ship its new smartphones with its Huawei Mobile Services, failing to use Google Mobile Services and applications of the California giant. The American restrictions are so restrictive that they even prevent the brand from ordering in mobile chips. Finally, a few days ago, the temporary license granted to Huawei to ensure the software tracking of its old smartphones was eventually revoked, forcing the brand to maintain Android updates itself thanks to the open-source community.

Towards software independence

This is starting to pose a lot of constraints for the manufacturer, who has decided to step up the pace in order to achieve software independence. According to the Global Times, Huawei plans to launch a smartphone with Harmony OS, its in-house operating system alternative to Android, in the near future. This smartphone, which should be reserved for China initially, could land by the end of 2020.

This news nevertheless remains very murky. First envisioned as a replacement for Android, Harmony OS was later described by the brand as an operating system for connected objects. However, a Chinese leaker said a few days ago that this OS – called Hongmeng OS 2.0 in China – could land on a branded computer very soon, perhaps to replace Windows. This could be a full-scale test before Huawei decides to integrate Harmony OS into its smartphones, in China and then around the world. It remains to convince Western users accustomed to Google – or Apple – services of the viability of such a solution.
