Thanks to 5G, the iPhone 12 is selling very well. It must be said that with this model, Apple has gone all out, focusing on several new features. However, so far, the Cupertino company has yet to follow in the footsteps of manufacturers of Android devices when it comes to the screen.
While brands like Samsung, Xiaomi or OnePlus already offer devices with refresh rates of 120 Hz, Apple is still on 60 Hz. However, this characteristic has a direct impact on the user experience. The higher this rate, the smoother the animations. And this is especially useful on video games.
Of course, these high rates don’t just have advantages. The higher the rate, the higher the energy consumption. And to overcome this problem, manufacturers use variable rates.
In essence, when necessary, the refresh rate can go up to 120 Hz. But this rate drops when a lower frequency is sufficient to display content optimally. Thus, the energy consumption is limited.
Offer a high refresh rate, without compromising autonomy
One technology in particular, called LTPO or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide, is regularly mentioned. This is already used by some Samsung models to offer high refresh rates, with a limited impact on battery life.
Rumors have been circulating for a while that Apple may also be using this new technology this year. Some sources had indicated that Apple would only use LTPO displays, with a rate of 120 Hz, on one model. But a few days ago analyst Ross Young denied this.
“I have heard rumors in the industry and in the media that there will only be one LTPO model from Apple later this year. Can confirm this is not the case. Apple fans can relax ”, can we read in his post on Twitter.
We are still several months away from the presentation of the next iPhone
But of course, for the moment, this is a rumor that should be viewed with caution. In any case, it is recalled that the firm already uses variable refresh rate screens on the iPad Pro (which, for the moment, still use LCD screens but not OLEDs like those of the iPhone).
In addition, the successors of the iPhone 12 will not be presented for several months (either in September or in October). In the meantime, we will be able to discover the novelties on the software side in June. Indeed, Apple has already set the dates for its next WWDC conference, during which it should launch the beta of the new version of iOS.
And this April, Apple will also be doing a keynote. If for the moment, we do not know which products will be presented, many sources indicate that the Cupertino company should lift the veil on its next generation of iPad Pro.
