In some faculties, the introductory courses are still dictated to each of the careers since the academic cycle for those who enter a career this year will only begin on May 3, a date scheduled according to the end of the middle school term.

According to the academic coordinator of the UNR, Claudia Voras, despite the difficulties that the completion of the intermediate level presented this year, “the number of pre-registered in global terms is similar to that of previous years.”

And highlights that careers in the health area have even more students enrolled than previous years. An election that, Voras points out, could have been influenced by the health crisis. “It is only an estimate, but there are aspects of the context that may have impacted. For instance, the greater demand for nursing personnel in health institutions can be considered an opportunity for job placement, or the aspects related to the effects of the pandemic in the subjective or the social aspects could have opened interest in these fields of knowledge ”, he maintains.

In the front row

In the Faculty of Medical Sciences, the university inclusion module course began in December with asynchronous and non-compulsory informative classes, and continued in February with compulsory and synchronous classes that last until April.

For several years, the faculty remains the one that receives the largest number of new entrants each year. This will not be the exception. As detailed by dean Jorge Molinas The medical career had 5,010 pre-enrolled this year, 2,300 people enrolled in nursing and 280 will begin to study the Bachelor’s degree in Speech Therapy.

“It is difficult to establish with certainty if that will be the number of entrants, because there are still several administrative procedures that students have to go through even after they have started the introductory courses. But taking many averages, we can say that the pandemic did not reduce the number of new entrants we had in other years, “he says.

In 2019, the latest consolidated data, the number of new entrants to the faculty was 4,562. Medicine was the most demanded career, with 3,135 students; while nursing had 1,213.

Makeover

Biochemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences was another of the faculties that, contradicting any bad prognosis, increased its number of entrants. In November, 896 people completed the pre-registration process and there were already 750 who presented the documentation required by the faculty, a process that just concluded this weekend. Last year, it was 719.

“The faculty already had a small but sustained growth in income. This was evidenced especially in the career of biochemistry which is the one that had the most resonance this year, showing the importance of the work of these professionals in health teams. I believe that the pandemic exposed the preponderant place that biochemists have in the health system ”, considers the dean of the faculty, Andrés Sciara.

In the house of studies a series of virtual modules is being developed for entrants of all majors, an activity that is accompanied by the work of tutors to accompany the entrants “because we are concerned about improving the entrance, but also the retention of the students ”, Affirms the dean and emphasizes that“ last year the majority of the students who started the faculty were retained ”.

In Psychology, “the income was much higher than last year”, Says the dean of that faculty, Soledad Cottone. Although he clarifies that the numbers are still very preliminary, those who completed the pre-entry procedures are already more than 2,400 people. Last year, in this same instance, the applicants were 2,000.

Tracing

“It is early to analyze these figures,” says Cottone and explains that, in part, they can be related to the follow-up that was developed of each of the students who entered last year and could not sustain the course of the degree. “We were talking to everyone, asking how they were and the difficulties they had to continue in virtuality. We cannot say so yet, but perhaps this year those who left early last year re-enrolled ”.

Human suffering

Even with these observations, he emphasizes that “The choice of this career is always crossed by some commitment to human suffering“And he comments that in the courses with the new entrants” this question always appears due to suffering and at this time that question appears in a sustained manner “.

For the head of the house of studies, “in times of catastrophe, meaning is sought for what is happening and these constructions of a heroic subjectivity also appear” that careers such as psychology can accommodate, “beyond that later these issues can be disarmed from critical thinking ”, he explains.

A whole path that will begin to retrace from May 3 when the new entrants begin classes at the public university.
