Until now reserved for devices in the Android Go program, the Gmail Go application is now open to classic Android smartphones.
Several years ago, Google launched its Android Go program, which aims to provide a lighter version of its operating system as well as some of its applications. A great way to let everyone enjoy Google apps, even on entry-level smartphones.
However, until now, many of these Google Go applications were reserved for smartphones running Android Go only. This was particularly the case with Gmail Go. While the applications display well in the Play Store, they could not. not be downloaded to a classic Android smartphone. This is now the case.
Indeed, the 9to5Google site spotted this Thursday that it was now possible to download Gmail Go on the Google Play Store for a classic smartphone with Android 10. A possibility that was already offered for the Google Go applications, Gallery Go, YouTube Go or Google Maps Go, but not for the company's email service.
A more basic version of the Gmail application
Concretely, Gmail Go offers a lighter version of Google's mail application. The main functions are available there, but we will not find a Meet tab at the bottom of the screen, the interface is more spartan and fluidity is less due to the lack of RAM and power of the devices for which the application was designed.
Installing Gmail Go as a replacement for the Gmail app may be of interest to those who would prefer a stripped-down interface that only provides essential Gmail functions. However, if 9to5Google was able to install the application, we did not. However, this openness on the part of Google could extend to including smartphones configured with the French version of the Play Store.
