Mercedes' domination in free practice has come to an end. At the top of the timesheets on Friday, the Silver Arrows did not outclass the field again this Saturday on the Italian track.
While Valtteri Bottas set the fastest time in FP3 in 1’20 ”089, Lewis Hamilton fell to 5th, more than three tenths behind his teammate. Between the two Silver Arrows were inserted the McLarens of Carlos Sainz (+ 0 “229) and Lando Norris (+ 0“ 323) as well as the Renault of Daniel Ricciardo (+ 0 “330) which could not go at the end of the session.
Victim of a mechanical breakdown, the Renault driver was forced to stop on the track just under ten minutes from the end, forcing the marshals to wave the red flag.
Starting less than five minutes from the checkered flag, the drivers were able to improve their times like the Racing Point of Lance Stroll and Sergio Pérez, respectively 9th and 10th in FP3.
Fifth in the first two sessions, Max Verstappen still cannot find the right balance in his car. The Red Bull driver had to settle for 6th position just ahead of his teammate Alexander Albon.
As on Friday, the Ferraris failed to make the Top 10. The first SF1000 in the standings is that of Charles Leclerc in 11th place. Sebastien Vettel's is only in 15th position. Qualifying looks very complicated for the Scuderia.
On the French side, the best time can be attributed to Esteban Ocon. The Renault driver finished the session in 8th place. Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) and Romain Grosjean (Haas) are 12th and 14th.
