The future of driving will be hands-free at Ford, according to the new “Bluecruise” feature presented today.
While the Tesla Autopilot performs well on the highway, the legislation in place and the relative level of confidence that Tesla has in its semi-autonomous driving system means that it is frequently necessary to remind the car that the driver is present. , by turning the handwheel slightly. Ford assumes this is no longer necessary, and offers semi-autonomous driving without the need for hands, in monitor driver’s eyes.
Cameras to check that the driver is paying attention to the road
If Ford is now able to offer automated driving on certain sections of the road without hands, it is because they already have a system to check that the driver is not distracted. Indeed, on the latest Mustang Mach-e for example, a set of cameras is present behind the wheel, ready to interpret the behavior of the driver, and to check in particular that his eyes are in the direction of the road.
Bluecruise is a level 2 driving assistance, similar to Tesla’s Autopilot but with the advantage of offering a real hands-free driving experience.
Ford is not afraid in its press release to name Tesla and compare its system to what Elon Musk’s firm offers, saying that the two manufacturers’ systems offer similar functionality, but with a more relaxing experience at Ford.
The Ford Mustang Mach-e which are already in the hands of the owners will be able to receive a remote update allowing to take advantage of this new semi-autonomous driving mode during the specific year Ford.
However, don’t expect to be able to enjoy it everywhere: Ford warns that this hands-free mode will only be available on certain portions of the road approved by the manufacturer.
As you can imagine, today this only concerns a few major highways in North America, which were traveled during a journey of more than 170,000 kilometers through 37 states and provinces of Canada. Hopefully, however, this will happen on the Old Continent soon.
