My father has been waiting for a replacement for the Nokia 3720 classic for years, a cell phone with ultra-resistant keys. When the Nokia 800 Tough was announced, he wrote to me immediately asking me to order it, he wanted to be the first to have it!
I must admit that the Nokia 800 Tough has everything to please him … a small color screen, keys, a much better camera than his 3720 classic, more memory, and so on.
Do you see the little chevron on the right of the screen? If you have the misfortune to click on the right button of the phone instead of the OK button, you will come to the "Account" options on the next tab and not to "Device Information". It’s not ergonomic, and that’s just one of many examples.
The phone is really complicated to use, even for the very simple use that my father made of it. To create a new SMS just click on the dedicated button, but to write the message itself you have to arm yourself with a patient. My dad used to use T9, and he doesn't want anything else. The "predictive" mode of this phone, which corresponds to the famous T9, is as stupid as possible … you have to look at all the proposals it makes before you can add very simple words like "Christmas" for example. The phone doesn't know the word Christmas by default, just like a bunch of other words. The dictionary is very poor.
After a week of testing, my father finally decided not to keep this phone and I understand it. The Nokia 800 Tough is great on paper, but the operating system ruins everything. The phone is complicated to use, even for simple tasks.
Perhaps for some markets the ergonomics are suitable, but certainly not for France. It’s a shame to offer such a special phone, without bothering to put an OS worthy of the name.
In the end, my father managed to find another used 3720 in very good condition, so he left for a few years with this model … the Nokia 800 Tough will not be for him … and I do not recommend it.
