The young shoots seem to appear at the tip of their nose. Schumacher, a Prema driver since 2016, will drive a 2020 F1 car for the first time at Alfa Romeo (C39). He will not be the only F2 driver to benefit from this opportunity, as Callum Ilott will be doing FP1 at Haas F1 Team. What to show their potential in the open.

Schumacher, the eternal “son of”, is no longer just considered as such. He is now the leader of the Formula 2 world championship, and exudes a certain serenity. After a failed start to the season, he was able to gradually gain strength, scoring points in 17 of the 20 races last. With 10 podiums, he finally dominates a category he struggled to grasp last year. We finally find the Mick who crushed the F3 in 2018.

He will therefore have the great chance to take part in testing with a 2020 Alfa Romeo, during FP1 at the Nürburgring. Kickstart, helping hand, or stroke of genius, it doesn't matter. He will meet engineers who worked for his father, at home. A dream come true for a young 21-year-old pilot. It comes just under a week after his first tests in a 2018 Ferrari at Fiorano. He had carried out tests with two other drivers from the Ferrari Driver Academy: Robert Shwartzman and… Callum Ilott.

Ilott finally gets his chance

It would have been cruel to leave Callum Ilott on the floor, he who is also having a very good season. Second in the Formula 2 standings, he was in the lead for a while, before giving up a bit. Regardless, he will have marked the spirits, especially those of Ferrari, who managed to get him a seat at Haas F1 Team. In view of the ongoing negotiations between the American team and Ferrari, there might even be a little more than just a seat loaned out during free practice… The rest is in their hands.

Robert Shwartzman should not be forgotten either. The Russian may not have the chance to shine at the Nürburgring, but he too will take part in a free practice session in Sakhir. He will also drive an Alfa Romeo on December 11. Obviously, Ferrari makes a point of treating all its young drivers on an equal footing. We understand them, we should not try to look elsewhere, they are so promising.

Big firsts for Schumacher and Ilott at the Eifel GP this Friday. They will have a Formula 1 of 2020 in their hands for the first time. It's up to them to put it to good use, and not waste their chance. If one of them wins the Formula 2 World Championship, there will be no return to the discipline. And if they don't want to finish in Formula E like de Vries, we'll have to hang on to the seat.
