Arriving in 2021, the 100% electric i4 sedan will have powertrain and 4WD models, with two battery packs, to compete with the Tesla Model 3.
Only the Tesla Model 3? Yes for the moment, but it will not last long. Several traditional manufacturers complete the development of their electric sedan, like BMW with the future i4.
From concept to i4
It was a little more than two years ago, at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. BMW presented the concept car i Vision Dynamics, an electric sedan promising 600 kilometers of range, 200 km / h peak and a 0 to 100 km / h in 4 seconds. Clearly, a direct response to the American rival, who started his career in early 2019 in Europe.
Since then, the futuristic family has changed skin. It will actually be a Series 4 Gran Coupé, more typical version of the 3 Series, in a 100% electric version. No specific platform therefore, as is the case with Volkswagen. Specifically, it will be higher to accommodate the floor housing the batteries, and the profile "fastback". Avant-gardism point style as the urban i3, the features will be close to the concept Series 4 Coupe with the famous controversial grille.
BMW i420, i430, i440 and i450
To make the complicated names of the different i3s forget, the next i4 will adopt a traditional nomenclature, we learned. Instead of 420d or 420i or 420e designating diesel, gasoline or hybrid versions, i420 will mark the electric. Thus, the BMW i420 will be the entry-level sedan, with an engine of about 200 hp in the rear position (propulsion) and a 60 kWh battery pack.
The second version of the Bavarian will be the i430, with a battery 80 kWh (that of the SUV iX3), with a power of 265 hp. The BMW i440 will bring the twin engine front-rear or 4-wheel drive, with 326 hp and 60 kWh. Finally the i450 will carry the high end, cumulating 400 hp of power and offering the pack 80 kWh. No sports version M is planned at the moment, but a separate finish M Sport will be in the catalog.
|BMW i420||200 ch||60 kWh|
|BMW i430||265 ch||80 kWh|
|BMW i440||326 ch||60 kWh|
|BMW i450||400 ch||80 kWh|
Regarding the range, it will range from 300 km on BMW i420 / i440 600 km promised for years, via the i430 / i450. The maximum load will be at least 150 kW DC via Combo Combo CCS, which is about 30 minutes to recover 80%.
Current availability 2021
The BMW i4 will be launched in the course of the year 2021, at the same time as the "iNext" crossover. The production will be carried out in the factory in Munich, Germany. The i440 and i450 described above would be available in priority, the others later. In entry-level, the BMW i420 would start from 50.000 € except bonus. A price that would put it in front of the Model 3 whose price starts at € 49,600 in Standard Plus version with 409 km of autonomy.
The German would be one step ahead autonomy, the American showing up to 560 km. BMW will also add more possibilities of configurations: upholstery, colors, equipment, etc. However at the expense of a bill that tends to climb very quickly, where Tesla plays on simplicity.
Finally let us not forget the Polestar 2, marketed in 2020. Audi is preparing a rival, type A5 Sportback e-tron, scheduled for 2022 on the EPP platform. Mercedes-Benz will also have its EQE electric sedan, which will follow the planned EQS in 2021.
