WASHINGTON (Reuters) – German car manufacturer Daimler AG (DAIGn.DE) said on Saturday that it would recall 744,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the United States from 2001 to 2011, as the glass panel in the sunroof could come off and pose a danger.

The recall involves more than two dozen vehicles in the C-Class, CLK-Class, CLS-Class and E-Class model ranges. The automaker said the connection between the glass panel and the sliding part of the part may not respond to specifications and lead to the detachment of sunroofs.

Homeowners who have paid for repairs to the problem may request refunds from Daimler. A Mercedes-Benz USA spokesperson said on Saturday that he did not have a world total of vehicles for the recall.

Dealers will inspect the bonding of the glass panels and replace the sliding roof if necessary, the company said.

Last month, Mercedes-Benz USA accepted a $ 20 million civil fine for handling US vehicle recalls after a year-long investigation by the US government into 1.4 million recalled vehicles.

Under the terms of the settlement, the automaker will pay $ 13 million and face another fine of $ 7 million if it does not comply with the agreement. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the company failed to notify owners of certain recalls in a timely manner, did not submit all reports, and did not issue at least two recalls in a timely manner .
