2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button believes the signing of Daniel Ricciardo to McLaren from the 2021 season will be decisive for the Australian driver's future career.
Daniel Ricciardo will be leaving the Renault squad at the end of this season to join Lando Norris at McLaren next year, and although he believes the Mercedes-powered MCL36 will be competitive in 2021, Button believes he is 'will probably be Ricciardo's last chance to fight for the world championship.
“This signing with McLaren will be a success or a failure for his career. He's still young, but he has to go to a team where he can win races and fight for the world championship. " Button explains in the Fast Lane podcast.
“It’s an important move for him and the McLaren with the Mercedes engine should be competitive next year. "
Jenson Button admits he asked Ricciardo why he signed with Renault in 2019, although the Briton believes the Australian made the decision to leave Red Bull because of the preferential treatment of Max Verstappen.
"I've already said to Daniel, 'I don't understand your decision to sign with Renault'. I know they gave him a lot of money at Renault, but Red Bull would have paid him a lot as well, so I don't think it's a money issue. "
“I don't think he felt on the same level as his teammate. I think that's why he made this decision. "
