Battery recycling is a major problem for car manufacturers and more generally for those involved in technological innovation. BMW is moving forward in this area by promising a full treatment of this key element for its electric cars by 2022.
The BMW propeller brand is proud to communicate its battery recycling goals. The German manufacturer is indeed counting on a complete reconditioning of this element within just a few years.
The mission is entrusted to the Battery Cell Competence Center located unsurprisingly in Munich. The engineers of this very special department are looking for solutions to improve production, increase cell quality, reduce costs and above all guarantee 100% recycling of BMW batteries. What to give a second life to this component integrating among others copper, aluminum, nickel, cobalt and rare earths. The process requires monitoring the entire battery life cycle. This is why BMW will minimize the subcontracting of this component to suppliers.
A factory dedicated to this maneuver will open its doors in 2022 in Parsdorf not far from Munich. Swiss battery producer Northvolt and Belgian specialist Umicore will provide their expertise in industrialization for the chains of the German giant.
