As Harley Davidson embarks on the electric motorcycle to diversify its customer base, BMW Motorrad, the motorcycle subsidiary of the German manufacturer, decided to take its competitors against a custom: the Concept R18.
A mystery motorcycle
A few days from the biggest motorcycle show of the year, the Eicma show in Milan (Italy), the German manufacturer unveils some details of this new motorcycle exception. It will be equipped with a boxer engine of 1800 cm3. This Boxer engine is the biggest flat-twin designed by the Bavarian brand. For the rest of the information, BMW keeps the secret, giving no official release date. "In the course of the year 2020", simply says BMW on his site.
As for the price, it's also a mystery. The R18 Concept is sold online blind. To acquire it, you have to sign a reservation with a deposit of 1000 euros. What to sharpen the curiosity of fans of "BM", but also that of lovers of customs in the American. In order not to let them cool down, BMW has, throughout the year 2019, given light throws of gas, to teaser shot.
In May, a possible version of this bike was unveiled. BMW did not choose to show it during a concentration of bikers. The Bavarian brand preferred the Concorzo d'Eleganza (elegance contest) which took place in May at the Villa d'Este in Milan where are exposed the most beautiful cars in the world. The machine presented seemed straight out of a Californian garage between the 40s and 60s, but with some modern equipment (brakes, shock absorbers).
A tailor-made motorcycle to be developed by customers
Each element of the model on display was a tribute to historic BMWs: the frame is reminiscent of the R5 of the 1930s, the "fish-tail" exhausts of the R7, Metzeler tires is inspired by those of the 60s, inverted brake levers , custom single seat and drop shaped tank painted in the old fashioned way. All that was missing was a Springer fork to be perfect.
"We have never put so much soul and inspiration into a motorcycle," said BMW Motorrad manager Markus Schramm at the event.
To this day, the mystery remains as the machine presented in Italy is only a possible version of those that customers can buy. On the booking page of the Concept R18, BMW explains indeed that "the model specifications of the R18 will be known at the time of the opening of the orders, in 2020". The mark states that "at this time, your dealer will contact you to help you set up your vehicle in a definitive way. "
The question taunts the specialists: "One can bet on the fact that the R1800 is proposed in version cruiser, tourer and bagger ", advance the site Paddock. BMW will certainly make the suspense last until Eicma, which will open its doors to the public on November 7th.
