SLIDESHOW. We trace the evolution of the BMW M3 and M4 since 1986.
BMW has officially lifted the veil on the duo of its new generation M3 and M4, as expected for their sporting performances as controversial for their clear aesthetic biases. These newcomers continue a lineage started in 1986 when BMW's Motorsport department, in charge of competition, decided to develop a road version of the 3 Series racing.
BMW M3 E36 (1992) In 1992, BMW renewed the M3 from its new 3 Series. The car was powered by a 3L inline six-cylinder engine of 286hp. In addition to the coupe and convertible, a sedan version joined the range. The standard M3 gains in power during its career to display 321hp. Its production ceased in 1999.
BMW M3 E46 (2000) The BMW M3 produced between 2000 and 2006 takes and refines the formula of its predecessor with a still atmospheric 3.2L six-cylinder of 343hp, sharp ground connections and a more rounded design. Only a coupe and a convertible are offered. The CSL version displays 17hp more and 110kg less than the base model.
BMW M3 E92 (2007) In 2007, BMW deeply revised the copy of the M3. The new generation receives a 420hp V8, or even 450hp for the GTS limited series. The M3 sedan is back in the catalog. This model remains on sale until 2013.
BMW M3 F80 and M4 F82 (2014) In 2014, for the new generation, BMW decided to separate by name the M3 sedan and the coupe which takes the name M4. An M4 Cabriolet completes the range. A six-cylinder is back under the hood with 3L of displacement but above all two turbochargers to display 431hp. The radical M4 GTS offers 500hp. This generation of M3 saw its production cease at the end of 2018; the M4 will last until summer 2020.
BMW M3 G80 and M4 G82 (2020) The latest generation of BMW M3 and M4 to date is presented in September 2020. We find under the hood a 6-cylinder 3L biturbo pushed to 510hp for the Competition models, the first to be presented. The autos are released for the first time with a standard dual-clutch transmission, pending the likely availability of a manual transmission. As an option, they can now be equipped with four-wheel drive. An M3 station wagon is to be marketed for the first time.
