From 2020, manufacturers will have to submit to increasingly strict rules in terms ofCO2 emissions, enacted by our leaders in the European Union. Concretely, brands will then have to display an average revolving around 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer, under penalty of a fine of € 95 per additional gram and per vehicle sold. Added to this is an increasingly severe ecological penalty, especially for large displacements, since it should then go to € 20,000 for vehicles rejecting more than 184 g / km. So many constraints that push manufacturers to review their ranges and their engines, and BMW is obviously no exception, since it would plan to do some cleaning up in its catalog, as our colleagues at BMW Blog say.
If nothing has yet been officially confirmed, it is rumored that the Bavarian firm plans to do away with its six-cylinder quad turbo diesel, starting next year. As a reminder, this one claims some 400 horsepower and 760 Nm of torque and comes to style the range, equipping the most luxurious models in the catalog. Launched in 2016, it finds its place under the hood of the BMW X5, X6 and X7 in their M50d version, but also powers the 5 Series and the 8 Series Gran Coupé. Unfortunately, its development costs, its low profitability and the increasingly strict standards will have got the better of it, despite its success with big wheelers, due in particular to its great autonomy.
A hybrid version to replace it?
For the moment, no direct replacement is planned for this six-cylinder only sold in Europe, while the 313 horsepower biturbo unit equipping the 40d versions should become the most powerful engine in the diesel supply. A little later, however, a new high-end engine should appear, but this time it could use electrification. A hybrid architecture could therefore be completely envisaged, while retaining a power still revolving around 400 horsepower.
However, if you want to own this six-cylinder quad turbo, take note that it is still available for sale. But for how long?
