Released in 2006, the Audi Q7 SUV was sold in its first version at 500,000 copies. Since 2015, the previous generation has sold 400,000 units. But faced with competition, BMW X5, Mercedes GLE or Volvo XC 90, Audi was doomed to put its Q7 back in tune with the times.
Changes visible outside …
Between the old and the new model, there is no photo! This goes through the simpleframe grille which gains the whole range and a characteristic LED light signature. Same thing at the back with new lights and a chrome bar running on the fifth door. New bumper, exhaust pipes and a silhouette that has grown 11 mm longer complete the picture.
… but also inside
What strikes you when you get back is the new dashboard derived from the Q8 and which has a very readable 12-inch diagonal virtual cockpit and two touch screens on the top of the console.
The first allows to control the GPS and the audio system, the second, below, manages ventilation and air conditioning.
The MMI Touch Response allows you to feel a slight vibration under your finger when you select the chosen option. It is also possible to chat with your car via the "amazon alexa" system or your smartphone. A technology that requires a little practice to master all the opportunities offered.
To travel at seven
The large Q7 SUV with its 5,053 m, provides seven places for a large family thanks to two seats in the third row that fit into the floor. An option at € 1,325 and acclaimed by seven buyers out of 10 but which will deprive you of a spare spare tire and will require you to take the electronically regulated air suspension at € 2,550!
Beautiful cavalry of your choice…
To set its 2.4 tonnes into motion, the Q7 offers V6 diesel engines with a 45 TDI of 231 hp and 500 Nm of torque, a 50 TDI of 286 hp and 620 Nm of torque and a V6 petrol TFSI of 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque. A 438 hp V8 TDI with 900 Nm of torque is also in the catalog for the SQ7. All this power relayed by an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission.
… And micro-hybridization as a bonus
Audi continues to generalize electrification on its models. The 48-volt lithium-ion battery installed in the trunk powers the electric compressor which provides a more reactive response time to the heat engine and also recharges during deceleration when braking.
Energy recovery which saves a little more than 0.4 l depending on the brand with the rings but also allows an engine shutdown between 55 and 160 km / h of up to 40 s and an active start & stop of 22 km / h.
Cocoon spirit on board
At the wheel, you quickly find your marks with very legible instrumentation and, once the doors are closed, you end up in a well-soundproofed bubble.
With the V8 it's another story! The roar that reaches you remains muffled, but present. And it must be recognized that it also contributes to the pleasure of driving.
Even if the dynamic steering settings can be optimized and the stabilizer bars activated to reduce body movements and improve comfort if you adopt a somewhat “muscular” driving style, you should never forget that it weighs more 2.4 tonnes.
The 30 driver assistance systems do not preclude favoring a more relaxed and calm driving. Your passengers, you will see, you will be grateful.
To stay in this bubble of comfort and technology of a premium vehicle, you will have to align the euros for the vehicle itself but especially for the options in order to have the best. Always a question of choice!
