Determined to occupy the compact urban electric segment, Audi is working on an affordable commercial version of its AI: ME using the Volkswagen MEB Entry group platform presented in 2018.
Audi plans to come and hunt on the land of the BMW i3 or the Mini Electric by putting on the market a small 100% electric city car. However, it will take several years to see it arrive in concessions.
Audi to tackle affordable city car segment
It's on the new platform MEB Entry that Audi’s future electric city car will be designed. She could resume the basics of the AI: ME concept car presented by the brand at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2019. It then showed a vehicle at propulsion able to develop 170 horsepower, or 127 kilowatts and which had a 65 kWh battery. It will therefore compete with the BMW i3, the Honda E or the Mini Electric recently launched. No date has been announced, the project is still in the preparatory phase.
The Volkswagen group, of which Audi is a member, has developed a modular platform for its electric vehicles called MEB. On its base will be designed the Audi Q4 e-tron, the Seat el-Born, the Skoda Enyaq as well as the vehicles of the Volkswagen series ID whose ID.3 which sees itself as the Golf of the electric, or as we recently announced the SUV ID 4 and the small Mustang Mach-E in partnership with Ford. In 2018, a variant of this platform was announced, the MEB Entry, for vehicles 4 meters or less, the size of an Audi A1 or a VW Polo for example.
Designed for cheaper vehicles, from 20,000 euros for autonomy starting at 200 km, this new platform whose arrival on the market should be on the horizon 2023 allows the Volkswagen group to expect the rapid production of 200,000 vehicles. In order to reduce costs, MEB Entry is designed to assembling an entire vehicle in just 10 hours, however at the expense of versatility. The VW up !, Skoda Citigo and SEAT Mii could therefore have a lot in common. The objective is obviously to shade Tesla, especially the Model 3 and the future Model Y which will leave the factories next month.
