The compact fourth-generation Audi A3 Sportback arrives around the same time as its cousins Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia and Seat Leon, all based on the MQB Evo platform. This premium version will therefore not have the exclusivity of the latest technological advances and will have to justify its price differences otherwise. It is also the first time that the manufacturer has launched a model in fully digital format, for the training of its technicians and its salespeople and for … press tests, a consequence of the health crisis. Not easy for the classic A3 to stand out in these conditions, especially as it remains in line with the previous generation, according to Audi practices.
New and classic
We recognize the pretty typical compact silhouette (4.34 m), but with more muscular accents especially on the very sculpted sides, as well as a front face that is both refined and aggressive with its large honeycomb grille and its sharp fires. Front and rear, the light signature is refined and takes on relief in the optical units, a specialty of rings. Inside, we discover a very sculpted dashboard, spectacular with its all-digital display flanked by air vents that give it the air of an airplane cockpit. The 10.1-inch central touch screen (but without haptic feedback), the direct control keys for the air conditioning, the very clear console now that the robotic box control micro-lever is electric, everything helps to create an atmosphere minimalist and technological that should please. The choice of materials and the quality of the assembly leave little to complain about.
Under the hood, the latest iteration of the TDI 150 does wonders in terms of pleasure / consumption. Very discreet, this engine hardly vibrates and is gentle to the ear when launched on the road and highway. But in town, it's impossible to ignore that it runs on diesel. Its revivals are full of grip and above all, in view of its performance, its frugality surprises with less than 5 l / 100 km on the highway at 130 km / h. The 7-speed S tronic is perfectly responsive, even more so in Sport mode for those who want to increase the tempo. What the chassis will be happy to accompany without batting an eyelid, with a good level of precision, without affecting the overall comfort, very soft. The 150 hp version has a multi-link rear axle, more sophisticated than the torsion bar rear axles of the low versions.
If this 35 TDI engine starts at 34,050 euros including tax for the basic finish, it will be necessary to rely on the Business Line (37,900 euros) better suited to fleets. With, beyond a few more flattering cosmetic details, an electric lumbar adjustment on four axes, electrically folding mirrors, the Virtual Cockpit and the MMI Navigation Plus GPS with Audi Connect Plus, the reversing camera and the Park Assist.
The infotainment system is based on a new MIB 3 platform which has a computing speed ten times that of the previous version. Six user profiles can be stored with seat configuration, air conditioning, frequent destinations, and frequently used media. The center console's touchpad recognizes handwriting, while the voice control system responds to informal sentences. Connected navigation can also display images from Google Earth. This A3 is also compatible with communication between vehicles and infrastructures with the Car-to-X system. Of course, connectivity with an Apple or Android smartphone on the on-board display is assured, while wireless charging pairs the phone with the more powerful car antenna. Later in the year, the Amazon Alexa voice assistant will be offered. Finally, the myAudi application makes it possible, from a smartphone, to locate and unlock the A3; with an Android smartphone, it will soon also be possible to open and start it without a key.
Of course, the A3 Sportback receives all the latest driving aids including a latest generation adaptive cruise control with traffic jam.
