Apple: iPhone 12 already reaches 100 million units sold

This milestone was crossed two months earlier than the predecessor of the iPhone 12, the iPhone 11, and is largely explained by the frenzy of purchases in the United States, which contributed to 40% of global sales of iPhone 12 Pro Max between December 2020 and April 2021.

Result: all lights are green for Apple. The average selling price of the company’s devices has never been higher, meaning that the sales surge is also causing a revenue supercycle for the company. According to Counterpoint researchers, the iPhone 12 series generated 22% more revenue than the iPhone 11 in the first seven months after launch.

To a certain extent, these good figures are due to a favorable context. Smartphone makers are seeing sales surge as countries around the world slowly come out of the worst of the health crisis, in which consumers have spent prudently. Smartphone sales fell 12.5% ​​last year, but much of the consumer spending that was set aside during the health crisis has been postponed to 2021.

Early research from Gartner seems to confirm the trend: In the first quarter of this year, 378 million handsets were delivered, an increase of 26% from the same period last year. By comparison, the iPhone 11, which only had a better camera and better video recording specs, was far from hitting the 100 million shipments mark in the seventh month.
